Mobilink announced today that it has deployed biometrics verification
 system at its 5 Customer Care Centers and 32 franchises in Karachi to 
meet regulator’s deadline of November 30th, 2013.<br />

Company said that its 789 verification system will continue in 
parallel with the biometric verification to ensure maximum security.<br />

Mobilink, in a briefing, said that it has completed a test run of the
 biometric system on all 37 point-of-sales machines at its Franchisees 
and Customer Care Divisions to ensure uninterrupted verification process
 and the security system.<br />

Mobilink has also completed the training of more than 150 personnel 
of the Franchisees, Sales and Customer Care staff and Customer Care 
Representatives to best serve its customers.<br />

Farrukh Umair, Head of Sales Mobilink expressed his satisfaction on 
the successful completion of the first phase of the project saying, 
‘Mobilink has always been the first to comply with all the directives 
from the regulator. We have yet again taken a lead in implementing the 
largest biometric SIM verification system and hope that it goes a long 
way in ensuring the safety and security of the people of Pakistan.’<br />

Earlier, PTA has directed all operators to implement the biometric 
verification system for sale of SIMs latest by November 30, 2013.</div>

Accountability Court (AC), Islamabad, Judge Muhammad Bashir yesterday
 awarded seven years imprisonment to former Director General (DG) 
Finance Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Imran Ahmad Zubairi 
for embezzlement of Rs. 80.175 million.<br />

The case was first referenced by NAB back in 2010, which is now concluded with imprisonment sentence.<br />

Court also imposed a fine of Rs. 70 million on Mr. Zubairi.<br />

As per sources in PTA, Mr. Zubairi transferred payments collected 
from telecom operators – under the head of license fee and other 
regulatory payments — to his own accounts under various names, causing 
millions of rupees loss to the national exchequer.<br />

A departmental inquiry committee, comprising the then member finance 
and others, had declared Zubairi guilty. Later the PTA formally 
requested NAB to initiate corruption reference against him, and NAB 
approved corruption reference and submitted in the court.<br />

Earlier the court had issued arrest warrants of Zubairi but he then 
escaped to the US. Zubairi was arrested in March 2011 by the NAB with 
the help of Interpol and his name was then put on the Exit Control List.</div>

A recent report had unveiled how LG Smart TVs log customers’ personal
 data including the channel they watch and USB data that they connect to
 LG Smart TVs.<br />

Today, LG sent us a clarification on the issue and said company is 
immediately rolling out a firmware upgrade that will fix the problem.<br />

Below is the complete statement:<br />

At LG, we are always aiming to improve our Smart TV experience.<br />

Recently, it has been brought to our attention that there is an issue
 related to viewing information allegedly being gathered without 
consent.<br />

Our customers’ privacy is very important part of the Smart TV 
experience so we began an immediate investigation into these claims.<br />

Here’s what we found:<br />

LG does not, or has ever, engaged in targeted advertisement using information collected from LG Smart TV owners.<br />

Information such as channel, TV platform, broadcast source, etc. that
 is collected by certain LG Smart TVs is not personal but viewing 
information. This information is collected to offer recommendations to 
viewers based on what other LG Smart TV owners are watching.<br />

We have verified that even when this function is turned off by the 
viewers, it continues to transmit viewing information although the data 
is not retained by the server.<br />

<strong>A firmware update is being prepared for immediate rollout 
that will correct this problem on all affected LG Smart TVs so when this
 feature is disabled, no data will be transmitted.</strong><br />

It has also been reported that the names of media files stored on 
external drives such as USB flash devices are being collected by LG 
Smart TVs. While the file names are not stored, the transmission of such
 file names was part of a new feature being readied to search for data 
from the internet (metadata) related to the program being watched in 
order to deliver a better viewing experience.<br />

This feature, however, was never fully implemented and no personal 
data was ever collected or retained. This feature will also be removed 
from affected LG Smart TVs with the firmware update.<br />

LG regrets any concerns these reports may have caused and will 
continue to strive to meet the expectations of all our customers and the
 public. We hope this update clears up any confusion.</blockquote>

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) yesterday inked an 
agreement for Integrated Communication Technology (ICT) services and 
infrastructure development with DHA City Karachi (DCK).<br />

The partnership is aimed towards developing DHA City Karachi as the first Smart City of Pakistan.<br />

Walid Irshaid, President and CEO PTCL while speaking at the occasion 
said that “We are pleased to extend cooperation and partnership with 
Defence Housing Authority. This strategic partnership is geared towards 
meeting the higher bandwidth and telecommunications needs of the first 
smart city in Pakistan”.<br />

“PTCL will develop integrated physical and digital infrastructures 
for the residents of DHA City Karachi that provides optimal ICT services

Administrator DHA Brig Muhammad Abdullah congratulated PTCL for 
becoming the partner of DHA in making the first Smart City project of 
the country. He said that the event was yet another landmark towards 
developing DHA City Karachi as a planned, sustainable and futuristic 
city of international stature. He reiterated that DHA would contribute 
in every way to ensure that the vision of Smart City was transformed 
into a reality.<br />

Brig Abdullah said that with development of DHA City Karachi we would
 enter a new era of modernity where residents would enjoy their lives 
with international living standards. He said that the new ICT networks 
and technologies present a huge opportunity in terms of making DCK more 
sustainable through providing real-time information to the residents, 
stakeholders and service operators.<br />

Earlier Director DCK said that ICT infrastructure will also be used 
for management of urban requirements of Smart City like surveillance, 
disaster management and e-governance. He said that the physically built 
infrastructure was seemed as the skeleton, the communications’ 
infrastructure as the nerves & veins and virtual overlay as muscles 
and organs which would make the city to breathe and move in a vivid 
manner.<br />

A large number of PTCL and DHA officials also attended the ceremony.</div>

Ufone organized a blood donation campaign in its Lahore office with 
the Ufone Volunteers Group and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS).<br />

Ufone Volunteers Group is a socially responsible employees’ group 
that voluntarily participates in activities that help the community, 
said a statement issued by the company.<br />

This blood donation drive took place on Friday, November 21, 2013. 
All employees enthusiastically contributed for such a noble cause. The 
donors included everyone from trainees to team leaders, even the 
security and transport staff.<br />

Post-blood donation care was also provided to ensure the proper 
well-being of the employees. There were doctors present in-house as well

work greatly emphasizes on helping out others in any possible way. The 
enthusiasm and interest of our employees in acting socially responsible

Minister of State for IT; Ms. Anusha Rahman Khan paid a surprise 
visit to the Fiber Optic Route of Chirah-Lehtrar-Kotli Sattian

Universal service Fund Company (USFCo)-Ministry of Information 
Technology had initiated Fiber Optic project that aims to spread the 
telecom facilities throughout the country with the basic objective of 
ICT’s to create equal opportunities and openness for all, irrespective 
of their location.<br />

“The Ministry of IT Telecom and USFCo stands committed to the 
envisioned goal of spreading innovative yet affordable ICT and telecom

particularly played an important role in facilitation of ICT services 
and has generated socio-economic benefits for the locals of this area.” 
said the State Minister for IT; Ms.Anusha Rahman Khan.<br />

She further stated, “An Optic Fiber Cable of about 40 Kms has been 
laid and has proved to be an asset for a population of about 101,000 
people and further initiatives will be taken in future by the Ministry 
of IT to spread Optic Fiber across all the Union Council’s of Pakistan 
to connect the entire nation”.<br />

So far more than 4,250 Kms of optic fiber cable has been laid to 
connect the un-served tehsil’s and towns. With these achievements, USFCo
 and Ministry of IT has created a success story for the public-private 
partnership entities nationally and internationally.<br />

Ms. Khan during her visit to the site was accompanied by the secretary MOITT and the Senior Management of USFCo.</div>

Zong today demonstrated its newly deployed biometric verification system for new Sales at a customer care centre in Karachi.<br />

Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, 
was issued a new Zong SIM using biometric verification after cross 
verifying his thumb impression with NADRA’s data in real time.<br />

Zong, along with all other cellular operators, will complete the 
roll-out of this new biometric verification system in Karachi at 
company’s owned Customer Service Centres and Franchises by December 
20th, 2013.<br />

Afterwards, a similar deployment will be carried out in rest of the Pakistan.<br />

representative. After which customer will have to record the thumb 
impression which will be matched – in real time – with NADRA’s data.</div>

Chairman PTA, while commenting on the occasion, said that regulator

Pakistan has over 2.9 million broadband subscribers, up from 2 
million just few months ago. These numbers are only bound to increase 
after expected 3G rollout. However, with this growing trend in broadband
 subscribers, the performance of Internet speeds in Pakistan isn’t very 
impressive.<br />

According to a <a href="http://www.netindex.com/download/2,21/Pakistan/" target="_blank">new report by Ookla</a>, the people behind <a href="http://speedtest.net/" target="_blank">speedtest.net</a>,
 in terms of internet speeds worldwide Pakistan stands at 172nd spot out
 of the 186 countries it tested during the one-month time period between
 27th of October and 25th of November 2013.<br />

The average internet downloading speeds were 2.29 Mbps during this 
period while the uploads stood at just 1.01 Mbps. The median cost per 
megabit during this period was $10.92 or PKR 1,200.<br />

Report said that results were obtained by analyzing tests from 1,810,280 unique IPs and 8,365,501 total tests.<br />

Interestingly, the highest average-download speeds in Pakistan were 
recorded at a place you probably haven’t heard of, its called Fazal in 
Sindh, 2.96 Mbps. (A Wikipedia page of the place doesn’t exist either.)<br />

Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad grabbed the next three positions with average-speeds of 2.40, 2.28 and 2.21 Mbps respectively.<br />

The unknown city tops uploading speeds too, at 2.27 Mbps, almost twice that of 2nd-placed Lahore’s 1.28 Mbps and Karachi’s 1.01.<br />

However, it is also worth noting that Fazal has got just 1521 IP 
addresses and the result is based on just 53 tests. The criteria for 
data analysis also requires at least a thousand unique IP addresses for a
 city to be included.<br />

Report ranked Islamabad atop here with 445,887 IP addresses, followed by Karachi’s 424,762 and Lahore’s 398,898.<br />

Talking of rankings, Hong Kong experiences with the best 
average-downloading speeds on planet Earth at 71.22 Mbps, followed by 
Singapore and Romania with 52.75 and 50.26 Mbps average-downloading 
speeds.<br />

Just to mention, Pakistan was given a Promise Index of 82.5 percent, 
just above India which got 81 percent of Promise Index of Internet 
Speeds. Promise Index is measured by taking a median ratio of actual 
download speed against the promised (or advertised) speeds of ISPs.<br />

This shows that index for Promised internet speed for Pakistan isn’t 
that bad. However, the back-haul infrastructure available in Pakistan 
isn’t amazing enough to offer higher-speeds. We don’t see this changing 
in coming years since the aging copper media of incumbent is apparently 
never gonna get replaced cent percent with fiber.<br />

Having said this, let’s wait for 4G, LTE to change this proposition.</div>

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Federal Investigation 
Agency (FIA) conducted successful raids at two different locations of 
Lahore, Town Ship and Ferooz pur yesterday and busted two huge illegal 
VoIP setups. <br />

During the raid at the area of Town Ship 14 gateways were seized and 
two persons were arrested while in Ferooz pur 13 operational gateways 
were seized.
<br />
According to the details, PTA carried out a raid with FIA Cyber 
Crime team on November 26, 2013 at a Franchisee located at GT Road 
Hassan Abdal involved in grey traffic. PTA Zonal office Rawalpindi 
launched a complaint with FIA Cyber Crime Circle, Islamabad to carry out
 the necessary investigation against recharging of SIMs which were used 
in grey traffic setups operational in Lahore.
<br />
Four persons including the owner of Franchisee were arrested. The
 SIMs and computers were seized for further investigation. During 
investigations, detainees disclosed two suspected premises in Lahore 
where illegal gateways were installed for termination of international 
calls.
<br />
On this information the two successful raids were carried out at 
Lahore resulting in confiscation of 27 gateways. According to initial 
estimates these set ups were terminating 2.4 million minutes per month 
illegally.
<br />
This action is expected to save substantial amount which was 
otherwise lost due to operation of illegal activity. It may be noted 
that PTA has launched a campaign against grey traffickers.
<br />
PTA monitors the illegal activities on twenty four hours basis 
and adopts different procedures and processes to apprehend the culprits 
and to prevent losses to the national exchequer being caused by illegal 
telecom business.</div>

HTC has announced a new high-end phone in its lineup, the Desire 700.
 The phone comes with dual-sim connectivity and a 5″ display on the 
front.<br />

The display is of qHD resolution so the phone certainly isn’t meant to compete with the company’s <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/08/htc-one-launched-in-pakistan.html" target="_blank">One flagship</a>.
 The design certainly has taken inspiration from that phone though. With
 its aluminium shell and BoomSound speakers, it isn’t difficult to tell 
where the inspiration from the phone has come from.<br />

As of the hardware side, the phone comes with a quad-core SnapDragon 
400 processor with 1 GB worth RAM. Amount of storage is set at 8 GB 
expandable.<br />

The Desire 700 is powered by a 2100 mAh battery which can provide

Nokia has finally announced the successor to the most popular and of the most inexpensive Windows Phone in the world, the Lumia 520 in the Lumia 525.<br />

The handset might just be a temporary alternative to the aging Lumia 520 and as a result, is little different.<br />

On the front you get a 4 inch display with WVGA resolution. There’s no camera above the display for the second attempt either.<br />

On the hardware side, the biggest change that is being observed is

Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, on the 
directions of Prime Minister of Pakistan, has taken up the long-pending 
Cyber Crime Bill to finally finalize it with-in days.<br />

A press statement issued by MoiTT has said that State Minister 
yesterday chaired a meeting regarding Draft Prevention of E-Crimes Bill 
2013.<br />

Statement said that all stake holders are being taken on-board for 
the finalization of the Cyber Crime Bill before tabling it in National 
Assembly for approval.<br />

Mr. Akhlaq A. Tarrar, Secretary IT, Dr. Ismail Shah, Chairman PTA, 
Mr. Kamran Ali Khattak, Member (Legal), Mr. Yasir Qadir, Member 
(Telecom) and representatives from FIA and IT Industry were present in 
the meeting.<br />

A high level committee has been constituted headed by Senior 
Legislative Advisor to Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights. The

Director (IT), MoIT, a representative from IT Industry, PTA and FIA 
respectively. The committee has been assigned the task to review the 
Draft Bill within one week time period and submit its report to Ministry
 of IT.<br />

Ministry has said that finalization of draft of cyber crime bill will be completed with-in days.<br />

Pakistan is functioning without any cyber laws. Meaning that one can’t be prosecuted for committing any kind of cyber crimes. FIA (Federal Investigation Authority) has openly said in the past that it can’t investigate any cyber crimes since there is no law in the country to keep check on cyber offenses.<br />

Absence of Cyber Crime Laws have not only resulted into increased cyber crimes but it is also the sole reason for non-establishment of e-commerce and internet payment gateways in the country.<br />

The Electronic Crimes Ordinance initially discussed and deliberated
 in the last Legislative Assembly which was eventually resulted in the 
form of Draft Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill, 2013, prepared in 
consultation with all relevant stakeholders.<br />

defacement, warned Indian hackers to stay away from Pakistani websites. 
On defaced page, the PCA said that their action is in response to the 
Pakistani websites hacked by “Indian Cyber Army”.<br />

Last month saw three great apps, which almost every Windows Phone 
user must be missing, getting added into the platform: Instagram, for 
which Nokia did a massive campaign in the past, Vine and last but not 
the least, Google-owned Waze.<br />

And things are not just limited to the app scene either. Huawei 
recently reiterated its faith in Windows Phone while ZTE confirmed that 
it would be making a phone running Microsoft’s OS next year.<br />

What, I think, it all shows that the momentum of Windows Phone is 
increasing at a pace much faster than we might’ve been thinking.<br />

In last quarter, as we <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/11/windows-phone-marketshare-grows-by-156.html" target="_blank">reported recently</a>,
 Windows Phone market-share in Smartphones grew by a mesmerizing 156%, a
 rate at which – if sustained — it might even trump iOS in the future. 
Not that Apple will care, given their own dedicated cult but still, 
becoming the second largest platform will give Windows Phone 
unparalleled coverage.<br />

Many might argue that this is far-fetched dream, but look at the numbers there were unimaginative once too.<br />

There’s something else to keep the developers interested. The Windows
 Phone marketplace has now seen its total downloads reaching 3 billion 
while daily transactions have reached 10 million.<br />

There’s one thing missing sadly though. Remember when the OS version 8 was launched,
 one of the bigger feature was the change in core architecture which 
made new apps incompatible with old phone but simplified the porting of 
apps from Windows to Windows Phone?<br />

Unfortunately, however, despite the promises not much work has been 
done on that front. The void is currently largely unfilled but there’s 
enormous potential on that front.<br />

But even that can’t take away the fact that Windows Phone has been gaining quite a bit of attention lately.<br />

What does it mean to an average user, though? Simple: competition and
 more choice, both of which make companies and innovation moving 
forward.<br />

But regardless of everything, will it become the biggest mobile OS on
 earth or even the second-largest OS remains to be seen. The current 
trend must not get broken if that is to happen.</div>

Last year, Samsung did its first major attempt in offering a phablet for a acceptable price through the Galaxy Grand. Now, they’re announcing a successor to that phone now, through the Galaxy Grand 2.<br />

The Grand 2 builds upon its predecessor by offering a larger, 
higher-resolution display, faster internals and a new, leather-like 
finish. These features bring it closer to the <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/09/samsung-launches-3rd-generation-note.html" target="_blank">Note 3</a>.<br />

On the front, you’ll get a 5.25 inch LCD display with 720p HD 
resolution and Gorilla Glass 2 protection. Another change people will 
notice is the new leather-like finishing on the phone, just like the 
Note 3 unlike the plastic of the first-generation Grand.<br />

 (Government Communications Headquarters) has spoofed LinkedIn profiles 
of employees at mobile communications companies and mobile billing firms
 to gain access to their corporate networks, <em>Der Spiegel</em> reported.</div>
The first known attack was on Belgacom, a telecom firm partly owned 
by the Belgian government, according to a top secret GCHQ presentation 
revealed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. That attack was among 
projects launched by GCHQ to infiltrate foreign networks.<br />

The British intelligence agency also targeted international mobile 
billing clearinghouses, which process international payment transactions
 between wireless companies.

Hitting US Companies
</h2>
<a href="http://www.syniverse.com/home" target="_blank">Syniverse</a> 
and Mach, a company it acquired in July, are high on the list of 
clearinghouses GCHQ has targeted for such penetration, according to <em>Der Spiegel</em>.<br />

GCHQ  apparently has targeted three network engineers at Mach, using the Quantum Insert method.<br />

Syniverse provides solutions that let different mobile technologies 
interoperate around the world. With its acquisition of Mach, it serves 
more than 1,500 mobile service providers, enterprises, ISPs and app 
providers in nearly 200 countries.<br />

"There have been no known breaches of the Syniverse or Mach data 
centers by any government agency," Syniverse spokesperson Bobby Eagle 
told TechNewsWorld. "Privacy and confidentiality are essential 
priorities for Syniverse, and we take these matters very seriously."

<h2 class="subhead">
The Essence of GCHQ's Attack
</h2>
The British intelligence service is, basically, redirecting traffic to 
and from targets to a server between them so it can intercept 
communications.<br />

This is known as a "man in the middle" attack.<br />

Such attacks are commonly used on the banking sector. iMessages 
<a href="http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79230.html" target="_blank">are vulnerable to MITM</a>, Quarkslab disclosed in October.<br />

"Man-in-the-middle attacks are one of the oldest kinds of attacks out there," Daniel Castro, senior analyst at the 
<a href="http://www.itif.org/" target="_blank">Information Technology and Innovation Foundation</a>, told TechNewsWorld.

<h2 class="subhead">
We Are the (Tainted) World
</h2>
GCHQ's techniques are strikingly similar to the ones used by 
cybercriminals when they launch targeted attacks, such as spearphishing.<br />

The agency first determines who works for a target company using 
publicly available data such as the victim's LinkedIn profile. It 
apparently focuses on IT personnel and network admins because they have 
extensive access privileges on their computers.<br />

The agency then gathers all available information about its victim --
 in one case, even gaining access to cookies on a victim's PCs -- then 
develops what are essentially viruses in payloads customized for the 
victim's computers.<br />

One method of attack involved concealing the malware payloads on 
spoofed versions of victims' LinkedIn pages. Pulling up the fake profile
 would launch the malware into the victim's computer.<br />

"We have never cooperated with any government agency, nor we have any
 knowledge, with regard to these actions," LinkedIn spokesperson Julie 
Inouye told TechNewsWorld.<br />

"To date, we have not detected any of the spoofing activity that is 
being reported," she said. "LinkedIn takes the privacy and security of 
our members very seriously, and when we're made aware of any activity 
that may be considered problematic, we work to quickly shut it down."

<h2 class="subhead">
The Sincerest Form of Flattery
</h2>
It appears that GCHQ borrowed heavily from the United States' National Security Agency.<br />

The NSA 
<a href="https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/10/how_the_nsa_att.html" target="_blank">places secret servers</a>,
 codenamed "Quantum," at key places on the Internet backbone as part of 
its so-called "Turmoil" system, according to security specialist Bruce 
Schneier.<br />

Turmoil is part of the NSA's 
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbulence_%28NSA%29" target="_blank">Turbulence</a> program.<br />

Once the Quantum servers are in place, a query to a website they are 
spoofing hits them before it hits the legitimate site. The query is then
 redirected to another set of secret Internet servers, codenamed 
"FoxAcid," Schneier said.<br />

The FoxAcid servers then inject malware into victims' PCs to compromise them.<br />

It's not clear whether the UK agency is using the same technology as the NSA, although <em>Der Spiegel</em> uses the term "Quantum Insert" in its description of the GCHQ attacks.<br />

"Capturing large amounts of Internet traffic and redirecting it like that should be off limits," the ITIF's Castro remarked.</div>

strange omission of the Start button and the hiding of the Windows 
Desktop, that icon-studded screen we used to launch into.<br />
Well, if you don't like improvement, are simply a Luddite or just 
fondly miss the Windows Desktop, you can take matters into your own 
hands. Here's how to start Windows 8.1 into Desktop mode -- bypassing 
the new, improved tile-based look -- plus a couple of other tricks.

Update Windows 8 to Free Windows 8.1 (If You Haven't Already)
</h2>
<b>Step 1:</b> Make a backup of your personal files by swiping
 in from the right edge of the screen and choosing Search. Enter the 
term File History Settings and then click on the results and follow the 
instructions to perform the backup.<br />
<i>Tip:</i> You'll need an external drive, like a USB memory drive.<br />
<b>Step 2:</b> Touch or click on the Store tile on the Start page.<br />
<b>Step 3:</b> Choose the free Windows 8.1 Update and 
select Download. Allow the update to proceed and complete. Then restart 
the PC and sign in.

Configure the Desktop Startup
</h2>
<b>Step 1:</b> Launch the Desktop from the Start page by clicking on the tile labeled Desktop.<br />
<b>Step 2:</b> Right-click on the Taskbar.<br />
<i>Tip:</i> The Taskbar is the solid-colored strip below the wallpaper.<br />
<b>Step 3:</b> Choose Properties and then the Navigation tab in the resulting box.<br />
<b>Step 4:</b> Scroll down to the dialog, "When I sign in

The next time you restart your computer, the Start tile-based page

The full listing of apps are in a page called Apps, not Start. You 
can get to the Apps page by clicking on the new-in-Windows 8.1 Down 
arrow in the bottom-left corner of the Windows 8.1 Start page if you 
want to see that page.<br />
Here's how to launch straight into Apps from Desktop, bypassing Start.<br />
<b>Step 1:</b> Launch the Desktop from the Start page by clicking on the tile labeled Desktop.<br />
<b>Step 2:</b> Right-click on the Taskbar.<br />

After finalization of IM – around mid-January – it will be floated 
into the market for telecom operators to get themselves prepared for the

High-ups at Pakistan Government are considering its options to block 
possible buyout of Warid Telecom of Pakistan by Etisalat of UAE, sources
 familiar with the development told RexHacker.<br />
<a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/10/ptcl-submits-non-binding-offer-to.html" target="_blank">Etisalat and VimpelCom of Russia have submitted bids</a>
 for buying Warid Telecom of Pakistan with its 12 million subscribers. 
While outcome of the bid is yet to surface, Etisalat is ranked favourite
 to take away the Warid Telecom.<br />
The decision to block Etisalat-Warid deal came at a time when UAE’s 
state run telecom giant has straight-forwardly told Pakistan government 
that it <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/24/pakistan-etisalat-idUSL5N0J42O420131124" target="_blank">will not pay remaining USD 800 million</a> against buyout of 26 percent shares in PTCL due to property dispute between the two parties.<br />
Etisalat has held USD 800 million for around 8 years because Pakistan
 government has failed to transfer the ownership of around 100 – out of 
3,000 – properties due to legal limitations.<br />

Pakistan has repeatedly offered Etisalat to deduct the value of disputed 100 properties – around USD 73 million – and clear the remaining amount it owes against the deal that happened in 2005.<br />
Etisalat, on the other hands, maintains that it will not pay a single
 penny unless all the properties are not transferred as a whole.<br />
Pakistan has tried almost every possible option to get the issue 
resolved, however, the remaining properties – the bone of contention – 
are confined due to legal limitations and are likely to not get 
transferred anytime soon.<br />
As a result, now Pakistan government is considering options to block the possible buyout of Warid Telecom by Etisalat.<br />
Sources familiar with the situation said that it is still unclear 
that how the Etisalat-Warid deal will be blocked or even if there is any
 legal room available to achieve this, but government is definitely 
ready to take up the situation to give Etisalat a tough time.</div>

QMobile Announces Two New Top-of-the-Line Quatro Phones

Despite the quality constraints, QMobile has been able to leave a 
mark against established rivals such as Nokia and Samsung. The pace at 
which they’re moving forwards, coupled with their competitive pricing 
has proved to be a recipe of success and now they’ve announced two new

The Z4 and Z3 are the first phones in the Quatro series, while the Z4 is the new flagship of the company.<br />

The Quatro Z4 is a tempting package but its price is unheard for a brand like QMobile.<br />

To start with, it is arguably the best looking phone from QMobile. 
Sporting a unibody design, the phone is just 7.7mm thick, quite an 
achievement for any phone. The iPhone 5s, for instance, is 7.6mm thick.<br />

At the front, sits a 5 inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 
1920 resolution and anti-reflection coating. The bezels are also just 
2.54mm wide. Above the display is a 5 megapixel front-facing camera.<br />

The internals of the phone include a 1.5Ghz quad-core “turbo” 
processor which is infact a Cortex A7 with PowerVR Series5XT, 2 GB RAM 
and 32 GB expandable storage. This processor sure is aging but should be
 just fine for handling normal tasks.<br />

Around the back, sits a 13 megapixel autofocus camera with Full HD 
video, along with a single LED Flash. The camera is also capable of 
panorama photos and burst shots, capturing as much as 99 snaps in 21 
seconds, supposedly. Dual-mic noise reduction should also aid while 
shooting videos.<br />

The Quatro Z4 comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean pre-installed and 
we’re not quite sure it will get updated to 4.4 KitKat in the future.<br />

Since QMobile has tried to make this phone feel just like any other 
modern flagship, the phone even comes with several software tricks of 
its own. Those include sweeping hand just above the phone to answer 
calls and directly calling a person by taking the phone near your head 
from the messaging app.<br />

The phone is powered by a non-removable 2000 mAh battery, 
substantially less than what we’re used to seeing in flagships and we’re
 a bit skeptical about it. Connectivity options of the phone include 
Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, 3G and microUSB.<br />

Now, for the price. The Quatro Z4 comes at a price of Rs. 35,000. 
That’s more than any other device in the company’s history and not many 
people would’ve seen this coming but for a phone with specs like these 
(at least on paper), it seems quite reasonable to us.<br />

The Quatro Z3 is the more modest offering of the two. Packing a 4.8 
inch Super AMOLED Display upfront, the screen comes with HD resolution 
of 720 x 1280 pixels.<br />

Just like its bigger brother, the Z4, the Z3 also comes in a unibody design, which is even thinner at just 6.85mm thick.<br />

On the hardware side of things, the Z3 comes with a 1.5Ghz quad-core 
Cortex A7, PowerVR Series5XT GPU, 1 GB worth memory and 16 GB internal 
storage, expandable via a microSD card slot.<br />

Right at the back is an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with Full HD video recording, along with a 5 megapixel front-facing camera.<br />

The phone’s connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, 
3G and microUSB. Just like the Z4, the Z3 too comes with a 2000 mAh 
battery which again, for an HD display smartphone, doesn’t sound quite 
enough but if optimizing has been done underneath and through software, 
it may be just fine.<br />

The operating system running on the phone is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 
which again, has rather slim chances of ever getting updated.<br />

Since this phone isn’t QMobile’s flagship, it comes with a much, more
 cheaper price, at Rs. 26,500. Given its feature set which, undoubtedly,
 isn’t that different from the Z4, we really believe that the Z3 may 
find a larger audience.<br />

With these two phones, we really hope that QMobile has upped its game
 even further, and that along with respectable specs on paper, it has 
also worked hard to provide a better experience with these phones.</div>

Few days back a UK based developer and Linux enthusiast <a href="http://goo.gl/oxmTt8" target="_blank">DoctorBeet</a>
 revealed on his blog about his latest discovery on how LG Smart TVs are
 logging your personal data including the channel you watch and USB data
 that you connect to your TV.<br />

Ever since his findings, the story has gone viral and had been 
reposted on various security blogs and webpages, and just few hours 
back, the <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/security/compliance/lg-admits-smart-tvs-spied-on-users/d/d-id/1112755" target="_blank">InformationWeek</a> has reported that LG has admitted its Smart TVs were spying on users’ data.<br />

LG TVs comes with an option to grant its users with an option if they want to enable the feature to collect their data.<br />

This option meant to be used for LG Smart Ad analyses to offer users 
ads based on their favourite programs, online behaviour, search keywords
 and other information, but according to the DoctorBeet’s discovery, 
regardless of whether this option is set to On or Off, your private data
 is still sent to LG Servers.<br />

He also claimed that, each time a user switch the channel, the data 
is logged and sent to the LG servers. This user data is sent as a plain 
text with no encryption algorithm applied whatsoever. DoctorBeet wrote,<br />

“This information appears to be sent back unencrypted and
 in the clear to LG every time you change channel, even if you have gone
 to the trouble of changing the setting above to switch collection of 
viewing information off.”</blockquote>
He also had demonstrated how poorly LG is gathering data from your USB devices <a href="http://doctorbeet.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/lg-smart-tvs-logging-usb-filenames-and.html" target="_blank">here</a> on his blog.<br />

After the evidence collected, DoctorBeet approached LG to catch their
 views regarding breach, and wrote LG an e-mail, to which LG replied,<br />

intelligence service uses ‘Computer Network Exploitation’ (CNE) in more 
than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer 
systems achieved by installing malware, malicious software.<br />

One example of this type of hacking was discovered in September 
2013 at the Belgium telecom provider Belgacom. For a number of years the
 British intelligence service - GCHQ – has been installing this 
malicious software in the Belgacom network in order to tap their 
customers’ telephone and data traffic. The Belgacom network was 
infiltrated by GCHQ through a process of luring employees to a false 
Linkedin page.<br />

NSA special department employs more than a thousand hackers</h2>
The
 NSA computer attacks are performed by a special department called TAO 
(Tailored Access Operations). Public sources show that this department 
employs more than a thousand hackers. As recently as August 2013, the <em>Washington Post</em>
 published articles about these NSA-TAO cyber operations. In these 
articles The Washington Post reported that the NSA installed an 
estimated 20,000 ‘implants’ as early as 2008. These articles were based 
on a secret budget report of the American intelligence services. By 
mid-2012 this number had more than doubled to 50,000, as is shown in the
 presentation <em>NRC Handelsblad</em> laid eyes on.<br />

Cyber operations are increasingly important for the NSA. Computer 
hacks are relatively inexpensive and provide the NSA with opportunities 
to obtain information that they otherwise would not have access to. The 
NSA-presentation shows their CNE-operations in countries such as 
Venezuela and Brazil. The malware installed in these countries can 
remain active for years without being detected.<br />

‘Sleeper cells’ can be activated with a single push of a button</h2>
The
 malware can be controlled remotely and be turned on and off at will. 
The ‘implants’ act as digital ‘sleeper cells’ that can be activated with
 a single push of a button. According to the <em>Washington Post</em>, the NSA has been carrying out this type of cyber operation since 1998.<br />
 The
 Dutch intelligence services - AIVD and MIVD – have displayed interest 
in hacking. The Joint Sigint Cyber Unit – JSCU – was created early in 
2013. The JSCU is an inter-agency unit drawing on experts with a range 
of IT skills. This new unit is prohibited by law from performing the 
type of operations carried out by the NSA as Dutch law does not allow 
this type of internet searches.<br />
 The NSA declined to comment and 
referred to the US Government. A government spokesperson states that any
 disclosure of classified material is harmful to our national security.</div>
