Upaisa, a joint venture of Ufone and Ubank, wins the award for ‘Best 
Bank-Led Mobile Money Programme’ at the most prestigious Mobile Money 
Global Awards 2013 in Dubai, UAE.<br />
Mobile Money Global Awards 2013 is a renowned and glamorous platform 
for companies to showcase their achievements to industry’s top 500 
executives from the mobile money sector.<br />

The ceremony took place between 5<sup>th</sup> to 7<sup>th</sup> 
November as part of the Mobile Money & Digital Payments Global 
conference. The ceremony was held to recognize organizations that 
develop, establish and deploy mobile money programmes.The winning 
procedure of the awards was purely voting based.<br />

the innovation which we brought in the mobile money programme. The aim 
was to provide convenience, simplicity and security to our customers 
combined with functionality and real time transactions for instant

Etisalat – the Parent company of Ufone and Ubank – and Master Card 
also won the award for “Best Mobile Money Deployment in the Middle East”
 for the launch of Flous in Egypt.<br />
Upaisa, which was launched in Pakistan recently with the largest 
agent network of more than 10,000 agents across the country, has reached
 a record high of Rs6.4 billion worth of transactions. The facility is 
becoming increasingly popular in Pakistan as it allows the customer to 
conduct transactions wherever and whenever it’s required. It is a quick 
and convenient method of transferring money for the unbanked population.</div>

Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) has said that it blocked more than 
200,000 Inernet Protocl (IP) addreses, 1,382 mobile SIMs and 3160 
phones/devices through their International Mobile Equipment Identity 
(IMEI) numbers during last one month.<br />

A statement issued by the regulator said that the grey monitoring 
system has been operational since early October 2013 and has the 
capability to automatically block those IPs – carrying VoIP traffic — 
which are not in the PTA’s whitelist.<br />

Furthermore, after the installation of Grey Traffic monitoring 
equipment, as per the directions of Grey Traffic Monitoring Committee, 
PTA has conducted an extensive audit of the whitelist IPs. Now 
whitelisting of IPs is being done after a very stringent check and a 
strict SOP has been made in this regard.<br />

As a result the IP whitelist has been rationalized and reduced from 51000 to 10,360.<br />

In addition to this, PTA has launched a 24/7 complaint centre. 
Complainants can lodge their complaints through email ( 
complaint@pta.gov.pk ), toll free phone (080055055), fax (051-2878127) 
and free sms (668) wherein they can report numbers in case any local 
number appears when receiving an international call.<br />

Through this facility 1944 complaints have been received till date. 
The numbers reported are not only blocked, but are also analyzed for 
legal action.<br />

In a recent case, grey traffic was detected by PTA and on further 
analysis it was established that a LDI (Long Distance and International)
 operator M/s Wise Communication (Pvt) Ltd. was involved in grey 
traffic.<br />

A joint raid was conducted by PTA and FIA and illegal terminating 
equipment was confiscated and culprits apprehended.As per initial 
estimates a total of 11 Million minutes per month were being illegally 
brought into Pakistan by Wise Communication (Pvt) Ltd. In another two 
successful raids conducted in Karachi, PTA along with FIA confiscated 
nine (09) gateways.</div>

Mobilink, in its second phase of freeing up the resources, has laid 
off another at least 100 employees from its technical department, we 
have confirmed with sources.<br />
With squeezing revenues and high CAPEX pressure — thanks to 
infrastructure “Swap” and “Maintenance” deals with Huawei and Ericsson –
 this was seen coming.<br />
Mobilink is reasoning the lay-offs due to a restricting process of 
its technology division. As a result, the company said, certain 
operational areas had become redundant, whereas new functions have also 
emerged.<br />
“Therefore, headcount is being reduced in areas that are redundant, 
whereas hiring of different skill set is underway”, said a statement 
issued by Mobilink.<br />
However, it is unclear that why already serving workforce isn’t 
trained to fulfil the changing needs of the infrastructure, leaving a 
question mark on the ability of HR department.<br />

On other hands, as we reported before, plentiful of tasks in 
technical department are being outsourced to vendors with a aim to 
reduce costs.<br />
Once vendor contracts will be fully in place, Mobilink, as part of 
group strategy, will outsource major technical activities, while 
in-house staff will, just be, carrying out level 1 maintenance on site 
intervention for core network, alarm monitoring and KPI (Key Performance
 Indicators) review.<br />
If sources are to be believed then more lay-offs are expected at Mobilink in coming months.<br />
Mobilink has said that outgoing employees have been given the benefit
 of severance packages that are above and beyond the contractual 
obligation undertaken by the company at the time of hiring.<br />
It maybe recalled that Mobilink had fired around 100 employees earlier in May 2013.<br />
With Alcatel Lucent, Nortel, Motorola and Nokia Siemens Network out 
of business, these lay-offs by telcos are putting fierce pressure in the
 sector with growing pool of unemployed resources in the country.</div>

at least Rs. 200 per month to avail life insurance — in the event of 
death due to any cause – ranging from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 100,000 for the 
next month, depending on their monthly mobile usage.<br />
Talkshawk subscribers can avail this free of cost service by simply dialing *345*101# from their mobile phones.<br />
Enrolment for Talkshawk Mobile Insurance is absolutely free and 
doesn’t require anything other than just dialling the above given USSD 
string. No medical examination or paper is required at all.<br />
Once enrolled in to the Talkshawk mobile insurance plan, your current
 month’s airtime consumption will determine the insurance value covered 
during the next month.<br />

Which means, subscriber will have to consume at least Rs. 200 after

Maximum insurance benefit allowed on one insured customer will be PKR
 100,000 irrespective of number of mobile phone connection he has with 
Telenor Pakistan. Moreover, only registered SIMs with correct details of
 the owner will be granted the insurance cover in case of unfortunate 
incident of death.<br />
After enrolment, a customer can nominate a relative to get the claim 
paid in the event of his death by calling Telenor helpline. In the event
 a customer has not nominated any beneficiary in his lifetime or the 
nominated beneficiary is not alive at the time of death of the customer,
 the claim will be payable to the holder Heirship Certificate as issued

Huawei seems to have emerged as the world’s third largest smarthphone
 vendor, said a press statement citing a report on smartphone shipment 
numbers during Q3 2013.<br />
According to a recent research at the Strategy Analytics, global 
smartphone shipments grew 45 percent annually to reach a record 251 
million units in the third quarter of 2013. This was the first time ever
 that smartphone shipments exceeded a quarter-billion units in a single 
quarter. Smartphones accounted for 6 in 10 of all mobile phones shipped 
worldwide.<br />

Woody Oh, Senior Analyst at the Strategy Analytics, commented, 
“Huawei was a star performer as global shipments grew 67 percent 
annually to 12.7 million units in Q3 2013. Huawei captured 5 percent 
market share and became the world’s third largest smartphone vendor. The
 popular P6 and G610 models have been among the main drivers of Huawei’s
 success”.<br />
Huawei has been working in Pakistani market since 2009.<br />

This was opined by Ms. Anusha Rehman, State Minister for IT & 
Telecom while chairing a follow up meeting regarding monitoring of Grey 
Trafficking yesterday.<br />
Mr. Akhlaq A. Tarrar, Secretary IT, Mr. Azmat Ranjha, Additional 
Secretary IT, Dr. Ismail Shah, Acting Chairman PTA and representatives 
from law enforcement institutions were also present in the meeting to 
discuss the counter strategy regarding Grey Trafficking as well as the 
respective role of all stakeholders.<br />
The State Minister for IT, Ms. Anusha Rehman, who chaired the 
meeting, acknowledged the very fact that Grey Traffic had started to 
decrease considerably due to the onerous efforts of PTA and FIA under 
the umbrella of ministry but stressed on taking measures for its further
 control at the earliest since it was the need of the hour.<br />
During the meeting the participants were given a detailed briefing 
regarding the Grey Trafficking whereby it was endorsed by all that there
 was a dire need of checking this menace.<br />

It was mutually agreed and fully endorsed by all stakeholders that 
with the help of a comprehensive plan of action there would be a 
substantial decrease in the quantum of Grey Trafficking in coming four 
weeks.<br />
Moreover, it was also reiterated that all those culprits who are allegedly involved in the phenomenon, must be brought to book.<br />
It is worth mentioning here that the Ministry of Information 
Technology and Telecommunications had issued a policy directive last 
year to establish the International Clearing House (ICH) Exchange for 
international incoming calls for Long Distance International, Fixed-Line
 Local Loop, Wireless Local Loop and Mobile Operators: In furtherance to
 the Ministry’s directive a committee was constituted by the Federal 
Investigation Agency to function in coordination with the PTA so that to
 curb nuisance of grey traffic.<br />
Accordingly, in the month of May, this year, a separate committee got
 constituted with the mandate of investigation and detections of illegal
 setups, planning of raid actions and follow-up of the cases, comprising
 of officers from both of the agencies i.e. the PTA and the FIA.<br />
The recent raid and seizure of illegal exchange by the joint team of 
FIA and PTA was a result of the initiative taken by the IT Ministry, 
under the leadership of Ms. Anusha Rehman, the State Minister for IT.<br />
Grey trafficking is a major issue for telecom operators as according 
to a rough estimate approximately 500 million minutes of illegal calls 
are made every month from Pakistan to abroad. Since the PTA is mandated 
to stop grey trafficking, a vigilance cell of the Authority has already 
started working formally to monitor grey trafficking while law 
enforcement agencies are tasked with legal interception of calls.</div>
