Telecom major Vodafone India and ICICI Bank Monday launched mobile money
 transfer and payment service 'M-Pesa' in Assam and other North Eastern 
states.Launching 'M-Pesa' Guwahati, the company's Operations Director
 (East) Bjas Murthy said the trademark service of Vodafone would empower
 the unbanked and under-banked sections of the population gain access to
 financial services via mobile phone.<br />
'M-Pesa' effectively 
leverages the combined strengths of Vodafone's global expertise in the 
domain of mobile payments and significant distribution reach in India 
plus the security of financial transactions provided by ICICI Bank, 
Murthy said.<br />
Business Head-in Assam and North East, Pushpinder 
Singh Gujral said the service would now be available in over 350 towns, 
130 Tehsils, 40 districts through more than 1,200 specially trained 
authorised agents and across 91 Vodafone exclusive retail and mini 
stores in Assam and the Northeast.<br />
The innovative use of mobile 
technology makes it possible for customers to enjoy a fast, simple and 
secure way to transfer money and make payments, Gujral said.<br />
Highlighting
 the relevance of 'M-Pesa' for the residents of Assam and North East, 
Gujral said,: "'M-Pesa' is a safe, secure and convenient service to 
transfer money and make payments beyond the reach of traditional banking
 channels. For households where the earning members migrate to larger 
cities, 'M-Pesa' will be the best way to send money back home."<br />
Using
 their 'M-Pesa' account, customers can at their convenience deposit and 
withdraw cash from designated outlets, transfer money to any mobile 
phone in the country, remit money to any bank account in the country, 
Vodafone Business head (M-Pesa) Suresh Sethi said.<br />
The account can
 also be used for making payments to recharge mobile, clear utility 
bills, pay DTH service subscription, shop at select shops and 
participate in e-commerce/m-commerce, Sethi added.<br />
"Registering 
for 'M-Pesa' is easy and simple. Vodafone customers need to visit an 
'M-Pesa' agent outlet, fill up a form, submit identity, address proofs 
and deposit a minimum amount along with it to open their 'M-Pesa' 
account", the Vodafone official said.<br />
'M-Pesa' has been rolled out
 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, West Bengal, UP East, UP West, Bihar, 
Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Goa, he said, adding it would be 
made available across the country in a phased manner.</div>

In a bid to promote mobile broadband penetration, Idea Cellular Tuesday 
slashed 2G data tariffs by up to 90 percent across the country and 3G 
tariffs by as much as 33 percent for six months starting November 15.The reduced tariffs will be available to existing and new prepaid and postpaid users, the company said in a statement.<br />
At
 the new rates, 3G data tariffs are now on par with 2G across all 10 
Idea 3G circles. Users can access 2G and 3G data at 2 paise per 10 KB.<br />
"Over
 33 million existing and new data users on the Idea networks can now 
enjoy reduced data tariffs on their 2G and 3G prepaid and postpaid 
handsets and dongles. The offer will be effective from November 15, 
2013, and be available for six months," it said.<br />
Vodafone India 
had slashed data tariffs by up to 80 percent across the country. Bharti 
Airtel in June had reduced rates by up to 90 percent in Punjab and 
Haryana.<br />
"Idea has reduced 2G data tariff by up to 90 percent 
across all 22 circles, enabling users to avail 2G data at 2 paise per 10
 KB. Idea's 3G users will now be able to save up to 30 percent on their 
monthly data charges as the same tariff will also be available across 
all 10 Idea 3G circles," the company said.<br />
Idea has 3G spectrum in
 Maharashtra and Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Kerala, UP West 
and East, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and 
Himachal Pradesh.<br />
The current tariffs for 2G are 2 paise per KB while for 3G, the rates are 3 paise per 10 KB.<br />
"The
 reduction in data tariff is aimed at catalysing data adoption amongst 
the masses and empowering them with the power of mobile Internet at an 
affordable cost," Idea Cellular Deputy Managing Director Ambrish Jain 
said.<br />
The revised tariffs will not only drive more data usage from
 existing Idea users but will also attract new users to Idea's growing 
subscriber portfolio, the company said.</div>

Vodafone in association with Timbre Media, a Bangalore-based start-up, 
today announced the launch of WorldSpace Radio for mobile users in 
India. The service is available across 18 circles with Vodafone 
customers gaining access to over 100,000 songs across 10 channels.<br /><br />A
 monthly rental of Rs.30 will be charged offering 300 minutes of free 
usage. After 300 minutes, the user can get a top-up of Rs. 7 which will 
provide 70 minutes of free listening.<br /><br />The service is currently 
active in Uttar Pradesh (East & West), Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, 
Mumbai, Bihar, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, North East, Karnataka, Madhya
 Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Orissa, Delhi, Chennai, and Tamil Nadu.<br /><br />Vodafone
 Customers can activate this service by calling 58000 (Toll free) or SMS
 ACT Wrdaio to 111 (toll free) or USSD on *514*580#. Upon activation, 
when you dial 58000, you are greeted with a Hindi IVR welcoming you to 
the service and listing the options for various channels. You can choose
 from a variety of songs in different genres and languages ranging from 
romance and ghazals to even dance-hits.<br /><br />If you disconnect and 
redial 58000, you are taken back to the song you were previously 
listening to if you do not press any number to go to a specific menu 
option. You can choose the channels by dialing 0 (Lists 5 channels). For
 further channel selection, you need to dial 6. This gives you a list of
 more regional channels. For any assistance during the call, you can 
dial 9. The IVR does not provide an English menu option.<br /><br />As of 
now the service is solely voice-based, but the company soon plans to

According to a report, Nokia will be launching its next tablet dubbed 
Lumia 2020 alongside the Lumia 1820 smartphone, at MWC 2014.Nokia 
Power User has revealed that Nokia will be expanding its tablet line-up with the
 launch of the Lumia 2020, believed to be the 8-inch tablet previously 
leaked with the codename <a href="http://gadgets.ndtv.com/tablets/news/nokia-illusionist-tablet-with-8-inch-display-windows-rt-in-the-works-report-441664">Illusionist</a>.<br />
Earlier, a report had suggested the same <a href="http://gadgets.ndtv.com/tablets/news/nokia-illusionist-tablet-with-8-inch-display-windows-rt-in-the-works-report-441664">specifications for 
the Illusionist tablet</a>, saying it would feature an 8-inch display. The 
report also claimed that the alleged Nokia Illusionist tablet would be 
powered by a Qualcomm processor and would run Windows RT 8.1.<br />
Further,
 the tipster suggests that the Lumia 2020 will be powered by a Qualcomm 
Snapdragon 800 processor and would also feature full-HD resolution 
display (just like the Lumia 2520). This would mean the Lumia 2020 will have a higher pixel density when
 compared to Lumia 2520 tablet, and in addition would come with stylus 
support. If the rumour turns out to be true, the alleged Nokia Lumia 
2020 tablet would become the first tablet from Nokia 
to come with stylus support.<br />
Nokia already forayed into the tablet segment with the launch of its 
first Windows RT tablet, the Lumia 2520 at Nokia World in October. The 
Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet runs Windows RT 8.1 and comes with a 10.1-inch 
full-HD IPS LCD display that boasts of enhanced outdoor readability and 
Corning Gorilla Glass 2.<br />
Moreover,
 the tipster reveals that Nokia Lumia 1820 will be company's next 
imaging flagship smartphone and would sport metal unibody design. The 
tipster suggests the alleged Lumia 1820 would feature a Lytro-style 
camera, which will allow users to refocus images even after they are

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has received very 
encouraging response from the local and international firms for its 
offer of spectrum auction consultancy, said a statement just issued by 
the regulator.<br />

The proposals submitted by various consultants for Spectrum Auction 
for Next Generation Mobile Services in Pakistan were opened at PTA today
 (12th November, 2013) at 01:30 p.m by the Evaluation Committee 
constituted for the evaluation of the bids.<br />

In <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/10/pta-issues-rfp-for-hiring-of.html" target="_blank">response to PTA’s advertisements</a>
 for the hiring of a consultant of international repute, published in 
national and international newspapers and on PPRA website, a total of 7 
bids were received from various consulting firms.<br />

PTA will finalize the selection of consultants after evaluating the 
technical and financial proposals in accordance with the relevant rules.<br />

While PTA didn’t communicate any deadline but it is likely that 
selection of consultant(s) will be finalized by 20th of November, 2013.<br />

The selected consultant (s) would be responsible for providing 
professional analysis, input, and advice/recommendations on the whole 
auction process as per PTA’s RFP and ToR, and for the successful 
completion of auction in a transparent manner, averting collusion, 
ensuring competition and complete transparency in the auction process.<br />

PTA is aiming to auction 3G licenses by late February 2014.</div>

Federal Government today notified Dr. Ismail Shah as permanent 
chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, we have confirmed with
 sources.<br />

A PTA spokesperson has also confirmed the development by saying that 
currently acting chairman has been appointed as permanent chairman of 
PTA for four years through a notification issued by Cabinet Division.<br />

Appointment is made as per telecom and PTA laws, the spokesperson added.<br />

It maybe recalled that Dr. Ismail Shah was <a href="http://propakistani.pk/2013/09/26/breaking-dr-ismail-shah-appointed-as-chairman-of-pta/" target="_blank">appointed as acting Chairman of PTA</a> around six weeks ago, when Supreme Court had <a href="http://propakistani.pk/2013/09/17/sc-rejects-govts-request-orders-appoint-pta-chairman-asap/" target="_blank">directed the government to appoint Chairman PTA</a>.<br />

After appointment of acting chairman, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had again directed the federal government to <a href="http://propakistani.pk/2013/11/07/appoint-permanent-chairman-pta-immediately-chief-justice/" target="_blank">appoint permanent Chairman of PTA</a>.<br />

As expected the decision came with-in days, leaving a question mark on the decision making ability of the government.<br />

It is wondered that why Supreme Court has to dictate the government, 
almost every time, to carry out usual and mandatory government 
functions.<br />

It merits mentioning here that appointment of Dr. Ismail Shah was 
termed “Acting” despite the fact that hiring was made properly while 
fulfilling all mandatory requirements.</div>
