Nokia Lumia 800: A Phone That Survived Over Three Months Underwater!

From the aged Nokia 3310 to the latest Nokia Lumia range, Nokia has a
 legacy of producing the most hard-wearing and stout phones.<br />
The Nokia 3310 mobile phone which was released in the fourth quarter 
of 2000, considered to be one of the most indestructible and the 
best-selling phone of that year, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_mobile_phones#2000" target="_blank">selling 126 million units</a>.<br />
According to Nokia’s <a href="http://press.nokia.com/2005/09/21/nokia-introduces-nokia-2652-fold-design-for-new-growth-markets-major-milestone-reached-one-billionth-nokia-mobile-phone-sold-this-summer/" target="_blank">press release</a> from 2005:<br />

“If all the Nokia 3310/3330 phones sold were laid 
end-to-end, the line would stretch from Helsinki, Finland to Santiago, 
Chile – over 13,500 kilometers.”</blockquote>
In fact, Nokia 3310 related jokes are well-known in the Digital 
World, these puns normally highlights the features that are often 
overlooked in the age of smartphones: durability, long-lasting battery 
life and heavy weight.<br />
In January 2012, the company wrote in one of their blog post,<br />
<blockquote>
“We haven’t failed to notice that one of the older 
children of the Nokia family has recently risen back from the dead. The

A fresh occurrence bolsters the belief on Nokia’s durableness and has
 risen my admiration up following one of these phones has been found in a
 lake after being lost for about three months – and “guess what?” It 
survived.<br />

Yes! <a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a>You’ve heard it right, the story has recently gone viral on the Internet which came out from the Sweden’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=725135880838623&set=o.15719890979609&type=1" target="_blank">Roger Nilsson</a>, whose Nokia Lumia 800
 went for a plunge a few months ago in a lake. The conditions of the 
loss were not instantly known, but it was evidently found more than 
three months later, stuck between a couple of rocks.<br />
Roger posted this story on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nokiasverige" target="_blank">Nokia Sweden’s Facebook Page</a>,
 stating that when he spotted his phone lodged between two rocks in the 
lake, it was covered with muck, shells and other waste. He cleaned it 
up, disassembled the whole handset and kept it on a radiator to dry, and
 charged it up.<br />
He claimed that his phone works completely fine without any apparent 
issues, and the battery lasts for a couple of days as usual.<br />
For the device which is not developed to survive in water, and is 
vulnerable to damage like any other regular smartphone in the market 
today is usually equals a death knell and If this story is true, then 
it’s quite an stirring achievement for a device that’s not even rated 
for underwater resistance.</div>

Actually, no. We’ve been hearing about it since the modern smartphone
 came along. Still, so few developers have pulled off the feat 
successfully that the seemingly tireless process feels like a gruelling

<b>The Mobile App</b></h4>
In order to make the system work, you’ll need a Wi-Fi for your 
smartphone/tablet and a good connection for your PC, or a USB cable to 
get connected. If you don’t have both the connectivity options even then
 you can get connected with your Android device through Mobile Internet.
 Its all there.<br />
The mobile app doesn’t do all that much, apart from offering device 
details and managing files in a clean and fluid interface, but it’s 
still a crucial part of the equation. (One cool thing it offers is the 
QR Code scanning through its webpage which triggers the app.)<br />
In order to improve the battery life, it’s highly recommended that 
you exit this app after every use. It certainly helps as I myself 
noticed it depleting the battery juice faster than usual on my phone.<br />

<span style="font-weight: bold;">The Web app</span></h4>
The Web app is the centre of all the interest. Unlike several other 
similar apps, AirDroid doesn’t require any additional installation or a 
PC client whatsoever. It itself has taken a few design cues from here 
and there and shows your phone’s status and notifications. All-in-all, 
it’s quite usable.<br />

The good thing here is that it doesn’t feel gimmicky and works just 
fine. Music files play, photos and videos can be viewed (though the 
latter uses QuickTime) and apps can be moved or uninstalled.<br />
The real treat it offers, however, is the seamless file transfer. My 
Nexus 10 appears quite problematic when connected to a PC via a microUSB
 cable but with this, it transferred files like a breeze and operated 
without a hitch. Same was the story with my phone. Uploading a few 
important files and my music right from the PC never felt as convenient.<br />

Sending messages is just as easy as it can be and if you find it 
difficult to type long messages on a touchscreen, you certainly won’t 
get any better than this.<br />

I was, however, less impressed with the find my phone feature. When I
 first tried to locate my device using the Web app, it thought I was 
near a city called Oakhurst in California. On my second attempt, it 
denied my existence. Funny enough. It did ring, however, when I 
activated the sound remotely from my desktop.<br />
Also, in order to get the most out of it, your phone needs to be 
rooted. Screenshots, for instance, can’t be taken without rooting your 
phone. Still, screwing your device for just a single app doesn’t sound 
too sensible to us.<br />
Now of course, normal usage is free of cost but if you’re a 
power-user, it’s recommended that you get the premium version of the app
 which gives you the freedom to transfer up to 100 MB files (up from 10 
MB which is allowed in free mode), 5 GB data limit, ability to see 
through the lens of your camera and better support from the developers.<br />
Pricing is a bit steep though. Plans start from $1.99/month.<br />
Still, if what you plan on doing with it is moderate file transfer 
like photos, videos or the like, then this app does the job better than 
most. Messaging, web browsing and seeing content from the eye of the 
internet sounds cool but isn’t actually quite useful but if transferring
 data is your thing and you have a good Wi-Fi, then this app is a 
must-have. I would give it a strong 9 out of 10.<br />

Well, Motorola had started working on this very concept, which was 
unveiled just now. Motorolla calls it the ‘Project Ara’ that will let 
its users to customize their smartphones. Users would be allowed to 
switch between diverse hardware modules to assemble their desirable 
Mobile Phone, just like apps.<br />

Led by Motorola’s Advanced Technology and Projects group, Project Ara
 is developing a free, open hardware platform for actualizing this 
highly modular smartphones. It values mentioning that this group is 
working with <a href="http://www.twitter.com/davehakkens" target="_blank">Dave Hakkens</a> – a same person who set forth this notion through his Phonebloks Mobile Phone at first place.<br />

Whilst Motorola already allows its users to customize some external 
design elements of its Moto X phones, the new project will grant users 
to choose the look as well as internals of their own phone, and even

Paul Eremenko had uncovered this on <a href="http://motorola-blog.blogspot.com/2013/10/goodbye-sticky-hello-ara.html" target="_blank">Motorola’s official blog</a>
 on Monday, the company says it’s already “done deep technical work” and
 is initiating the process up to the public and volunteers to begin 
designing hardware modules, “Motorola is inviting people across the 
globe to become Ara Scouts.”<br />
Anybody can volunteer the Project and can expect certain perks, the 
company says, “A hundred of the most active scouts will receive Project 
Ara at no cost when it launches, and all scouts will receive an

Hakkens has described his design as a “phone worth keeping” – with 
the capability to upgrade block by block and (hopefully) never encounter
 any obsolescence, again we’d call this idea a phone definitely worth 
building. But I still wonder if the waterproofing will be the 
possibility with such a design?</div>

Programme (SIP) by organizing a Recognition and Graduation Ceremony 2013

confirm us that company is looking for ways to substitute its student 
package with other similar products.</div>

It merits mentioning here that PTCL has communicated its customers 
through monthly bills this month that 1 MB student package would be 
charged at Rs. 1,250, while 2 MB student package will be charged Rs. 
1,450 from November 1st, 2013.</div>

With changing market dynamics, company is now looking for ways to 
capitalize the niche with similar but capped products to boost revenues.
 One such example is Economy Broadband Package, that offers 1Mbps speeds at a monthly charge of Rs. 499, but comes with 10 GB data limit per month.</div>

PTCL told RexHacker that customers should expect a wide array of 
products for students starting 2014. Company said that not only various 
new broadband packages will be announced but more technologies will be 
brought into the scope to entertain the students.</div>

During your visit to a local mobile market, have you ever come across
 a situation when two smartphones having same name, same brand, exactly 
same features and same specs but they are sold at two different prices?<br />
One being sold at at-least half the price of the other.<br />
Ever wondered why? especially when the cheaper phone isn’t Chinese version?<br />
Well that’s because there are two versions of smartphones reaching 
Pakistani stores these days. One of them is usually the global version 
or the standard version that is sold at normal or higher prices. Then 
there’s a Korean Versions of smartphones, which are sold with lower 
price tags.<br />
These Korean smartphones, as mentioned above, comes with same looks, 
equally good build quality and with same features as of the 
international version.<br />
<b>How to Recognize a Korean Smartphone?</b><br />
<div class="adsxpls" id="adsxpls1" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here are some ways of recognizing a Korean version of smartphone:<br />
<ul>
<li>Korean phones mostly have antennas, which look terrible and they have no use in Pakistan.</li>
<li>Plus most of these phones will have some kind of logos on the back, 
showing that these phones are on a carrier and they have been unlocked.</li>
<li>Boot screen on Korean phones is also different than the 
international version. We noticed most phones had anycall logo on the 
loading screen (see above image).</li>
</ul>
Please note that some Korean phones come without any differences and 
are exactly the duplicate of standard version and hence hard to 
recognize.<br />
In such cases, you will have to judge the origin of smartphone with the shortcomings that are mentioned below:<br />
<b>Shortcomings of Korean Smartphones:</b><br />
<ul>
<li>These phones have 80 character limit for text messages, which means 
if you want to send a longer (than 80 character) SMS then you won’t be 
able send the complete message. There is a way to increase text limit to
 160 by installing Go SMS pro or handcent, but that’s something not 
usual.</li>
<li>These phones have different unnecessary apps installed on them – and
 can’t be uninstalled unless device is rooted — which consume storage 
and RAM.</li>
<li>It’s difficult to root these phones as some of these phone have 
recovery mod in Korean language, custom ROMs are hard to find and 
install for such phones. Finding firmware can also be hard.</li>
<li>Some users reported that Korean phones, at times, struggle with signals and hence faced call drop issues</li>
<li>For some users, Korean version of smartphones had issues with recognizing SIM card.</li>
<li>These Korean phones consume almost double the battery as compared to international versions.</li>
<li>These phones come with pathetic resale value.</li>
</ul>
These were few compromises that you will have to make for paying less.<br />
But Beware of the fact that some shopkeepers may also try to sell you
 the Korean phone at standard prices (in case of used handsets), so 
while buying a used handset make sure that you are buying only what you 
are paying for.<br />
Also to note, before buying smartphones from online stores and 
classified websites (such as from OLX), the device must be checked 
properly before you make a purchase.<br />

According to a new report on companies that spent most on Research 
and Development last year, Samsung ranked 2nd overall. The Korean 
company spent $10.4 billion on its future projects, $1 billion less than
 the German car company Volkswagen which came first.<br />
Meanwhile Samsung’s primary competitors weren’t even close. Apple, for instance, wasn’t even in the table.<br />
Only Nokia and Sony managed an appearance, climbing on to 18th and 
20th spots respectively. For Nokia with $6.1 billion, the year marked a 
14.4% plunge in the money spent on this category.<br />
Intel and Microsoft reached 4th and 5th respectively while Google, 
with its plethora of both bizarre and high-tech projects could only 
reach 12th, spending $6.8 billion.<br />

What, however, is worth noting is that these companies  have spent 
this money, not only on their mobile phone divisions, but on pretty much

Televisions to Refrigerators. Also, while some companies have spent more
 on research than others, the difference amongst them isn’t really that 
much.<br />
The overall spend, globally, on the R&D stood at $638 billion, 
with Software & Internet, Health, and Auto sectors accounting for 
74% of the overall growth in spending.<br />
Overall, technology companies grabbed 13 positions out of 20, which 
shows just how much on the cutting-edge the companies here have to be.<br />

LG today announced the world’s first true curved-screen smartphone 
the G Flex. With the announcement, LG has officially taken on the rival 
Samsung in curved screen smartphone market.<br />
Weighing a little high at 177g, the G Flex uses a flexible OLED 
screen technology offer 6 inch display with a dramatic curve on the 
horizontal axis.<br />
Characterizing the G Flex, Park Jong-Seok, President of LG’s mobile 
Unit said that phone is the best representation yet of how a smartphone 
should be curved. He called it world’s first real curved-screen 
smartphone.<br />
Inside the G Flex, there is a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 
processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, and a staggering 3,500 mAh
 battery.<br />
LG has said that curved nature of screen will offer wider viewing 
angles and enhanced experience. Unlike Samsung, LG didn’t offer any 
tailor-made aiding software to capitalize the curved screen.<br />

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started to confirm 
blocking of unverified SIMs by inspecting the Home Location Registers 
(HLRs) of the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs), said a statement issued 
by the regulator.<br />
PTA team headed by Director General (Enforcement) visited CMOs’ 
offices during last week to confirm the blocking of SIMs that could not 
be re-verified beyond September 2013.<br />
During the visit, progress made by CMOs on identifying and blocking 
“not re-verified” SIMs was checked by PTA. CMOs assured PTA to continue 
their efforts against identity theft wherein SIMs were activated without
 the knowledge of CNIC holders, said the statement.<br />

It was, however, not mentioned in the statement that how many 
unregistered SIMs were blocked during the process. It also didn’t 
clarify if all the unregistered SIMs were blocked or if there were still
 any unregistered byt unblocked SIMs remaining.<br />
It is pertinent to mention here that PTA has set up a system called 
“SIM Information System – 668” in order to ensure that the SIMs are 
registered against the CNIC of the authorized (legitimate) user.<br />
A customer can get the count of each mobile company’s SIMs registered
 against his/her CNIC by sending his/her CNIC number to short code 
“668”. In case of any data mismatch, the customer can remove extra SIMs 
against his/her CNIC by requesting respective operator.<br />
Users of all such disowned SIMs are then approached by respective 
mobile operator to get the SIM registered against his/her CNIC. 
Otherwise, the same is blocked after 15 days’ time period. General 
public is requested to support PTA and CMOs by using this system and 
disown extra SIMs registered on their CNICs without their consent.<br />
PTA is following the policy guidelines of the government on blocking 
and verification of SIMs. It is hoped that the issue of un-authorized 
SIMs will be resolved through a joint effort by all stakeholders 
including the general public.</div>

The iPad Air, at least on paper, is lagging behind the competition in
 several aspects but again, Apple has never tried to compete in a 
numbers race and that is the best part. As usual, the iPad Air is 
perfect in doing the basic things, plus, it is unmatched when it comes 
to ecosystem.</div>

It may not be the most productive but the free suite of iWork apps 
has drastically improved that too. With a competitive price and a strong
 backing from the App Store, it remains the tablet to beat (at least

The Lumia 2520 isn't Nokia's First Tablet, Check Out the Lost Ones Here!

Last week, Nokia announced its “first” Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520.
 (Not many would’ve even given that aspect attention.) This means that 
while the Lumia 2520 is the company’s first tablet in years, it is far 
from being the first one.<br />
If you’re a Nokia fan, you already know about following devices that 
were marketed by Nokia as “Internet tablets”; these lost products 
started coming to market during 2005 with the 770. The last one (N900) 
came in 2009.<br />
What’s more interesting is that all of them came with a resistive 
touchscreen, two years before Apple popularised the technology in 
portable devices.<br />

had a 4.1 inch resistive touchscreen which got input from a stylus. 
Apart from that, it had a 252Mhz processor, 64 MB RAM and 128 MB

The resultant was a slow device which got scathing reviews. Long forgotten.<br />

The next attempt came just days after the original iPhone came. 
Despite this, the N800 is probably the most neglected Nokia product from
 the top-end N-series.<br />
Having a 4.1 inch resistive touchscreen again, this time it came with
 an underclocked 330 Mhz processor, 128 MB RAM, 64 MB expandable storage
 and upgraded Meamo OS. At least the thing worked this time, getting 3.5
 stars out of 5 from Cnet.<br />

The N810 was the last Nokia product which got marketed as an Internet
 tablet and this time, it came with several big changes. Nokia N810 
featured a more pocketable design plus a slide-out backlit keyboard.<br />
The 4.1 inch resistive touchscreen display was still there, but it 
had 2 GB expandable memory, newer Maemo OS and a VGA camera this time. 
It was powered by a 400 Mhz processor on top of a 128 MB RAM. This 
product too got forgotten, however.<br />
<b>Nokia N900 (2009)</b><br />

The N900 wasn’t an internet tablet only, it was a phone and it ran on
 the same Maemo OS. In my opinion, that telephone functionality is the 
reason why the N900 is a reasonably popular device because you see, a 
Nokia product without a SIM card slot isn’t quite Nokia enough. 
Therefore, even the Lumia 2520 and the Nokia Booklet 3G come with with 
SIM card functionality.<br />
The touchscreen was smaller at 3.5 inches and it borrowed the same 
bizarre keyboard from the N97 but the N900 came with a Cortex A8 
processor, 256 MB RAM, 32 GB storage and a 5 megapixel front camera. At 
the time of its release, it was among the most powerful phones on the 
market.<br />
But its greatest legacy was its ability to run almost everything you 
threw at it. From Android to Windows Mobile, everything you throw at it 
runs. Hell, there are even tutorials of full-fledged Windows running on 
the device. This amazing capability will keep the N900 alive for a long 
time to come.<br />
These all internet tablets are obsolete and discontinued now and the 
future lies in Lumia 2520 and Windows. Pretty much all of these “lost” 
devices were failures and it will be worth watching whether the 2520 
will change that.<span style="font-weight: bold;"></span></div>

Introduction</h3>
Desire has long been the signature of the company's tier-2 lineup.

The Desire 500 may not be a sports car, but the quad-core 1.2GHz 
processor would mean it should be a nice cruiser - and most people are 
after that in a midranger. The display resolution is not up there with 
the best on the positive side, the graphical sub-system doesn't have to 
draw as many pixels on the screen so this may even help with 
performance. Also impressive on paper are the camera capabilities, which
 despite not being able to handle 1080p, include 720p and slow-motion 
videos. As an added bonus the front-facing camera shoots in 720p as 
well.<br />

Just two days ago Japan Display announced an amazingly sounding 12.1" 4K display for tablets. That one featured 3840x2160 pixel resolution and 365ppi density.<br />
Today Japan Display unveiled another ultra high resolution display, 
this time for pocketable mobile devices. The new panel has 1440 x 2560 
pixels and is available in two flavors - a 5.4" version with the 
chart-topping 543ppi density and a 6.2" model with 473ppi.<br />
Both models of the new display have 1mm thin bezels, greater than 160
 degree viewing angles and use LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) 
technology for keeping power consumption under control.<br />
The 5.4-inch unit measures at 69.59 x 126.67 x 1.12 mm and has 1500:1
 contrast, while its bigger 6.2" sibling spreads at 80.18 x 146.7 x 1.65
 mm and offers a 1000:1 contrast ratio.<br />
It's unclear when we will see an actual product touting these new 
screens, but seeing how screen sizes and resolutions evolve recently, it
 might not take longer than until next year.</div>

The new 1080p 6-inch screen has a pixel density of 368 ppi and is a 
ClearBlack IPS LCD unit with Super Sensitive touch. It's covered by 
Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for protection and Nokia has worked hard on its 
legibility in direct sunlight. The larger screen real estate now allows 
for a third column of Live Tiles on the homescreen or you can simply 
enjoy more large-sized tiles.<br />
The Nokia Lumia 1520 takes after the Lumia 1020 design - it's 
actually like a supersized version of the 1020 sans the camera hump on 
the back. A part of the polycarbonate plastic used comes from recycling,
 so it's more environmentally friendly, too. <br />
Inside the new smartphone there is a 3400mAh battery (as compared to 
2000 mAh for the Lumia 1020), allowing for up to 32 days of standby and 
up to 124h of music playback.<br />
There is a price to be paid for that battery capacity. While the 
Lumia 1520 is quite slim at 8.7mm of thickness, it's really heavy at 
209g. In comparison, the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is way lighter 
at 168 g, while the 6.4-inch Sony Xperia Z Ultra (with all the glass it 
has on the back) weighs around the same at 212g.<br />

Connectivity-wise, the Lumia 1520 comes with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac with 
channel bonding, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, LTE up to 150 Mbps, HSDPA 
up to 42.2 Mbps and HSUPA up to 5.76 Mbps.<br />
The Lumia 1520 comes with four microphones on board, which not only 
get used for multimicrophone noise cancellation in calls, but also 
deliver Nokia's proprietary Rich sound recording. <br />
The Lumia 1520 uses a 26 mm wide angle 20MP PureView camera with 
6-lens Zeiss optics and a 1/2.5 inch BSI sensor. The camera has OIS and 
makes use of oversampling, which results into smaller res photos with 
less noise and also allows for lossless zooming. There is no xenon flash
 though, only a Dual LED one. Video recording maxes out at 1080p@30fps.<br />
Nokia has also revamped the Nokia Camera app, integrating the Nokia 
Smart Camera and the Nokia Pro camera functionality inside the regular 
camera UI and allowing for a seamless camera mode changing.<br />

Software-wise, the Nokia Lumia 1520 will come with the latest stuff 
that Microsoft and Nokia have on offer. It's Windows Phone 8 with a 
little something called Lumia Black and it includes all the latest 
software enhancements from both companies. It comes with stuff like 
Nokia HERE Drive+ with global free turn-by-turn navigation, true offline
 support and audible speed limit warnings, the new Nokia Camera app, the
 Nokia Storyteller app, the Nokia Beamer app, but also Microsoft's new 
suite of Bing apps and customized ringtones for individual contacts, 
something that hasn't been available on Windows Phone so far. The Lumia 
Black update premiers on the Nokia 1520, but will be available as an 
update to other Lumias in the beginning of 2014.<br />

later this autumn, starting in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, the U.S. (an

Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom, earlier this month, issued the policy directive for the auction of 3G
 / next generation telecom licenses. MoIT had said that the policy for 
auction of next-gen licenses was approved by Mr. Nawaz Sharif, the Prime
 Minister of Pakistan.<br />
This policy directive was handed over to Pakistan Telecommunication 
Authority for the implementation of license auction, for which PTA is already perusing with all its resources.<br />
Here is the full content of the policy directive on the auction of next generation telecom licenses:<br />

<ul>
<li>PTA will be responsible for transparent and competitive auction of the next-gen spectrum.</li>
<li>The directive said that allotment of spectrum will be technology 
neutral and will be usable for technologies standardized for 3G and 
advanced generation(s) of mobile services.</li>
<li>As identified by Frequency Allocation Board (FAB), a 30MHz paired 
spectrum in 1.9GHz/2.1GHz band will be auctioned to telecom operators.</li>
<li>PTA is entrusted to carry out the auction process, fulfilling the 
policy objective of optimal outcome mitigating chances of collusion 
among bidders.</li>
<li>Auction shall by accordingly conducted by PTA in the minimum possible time after the issuance of this directive.</li>
<li>PTA shall carry out the appointment of internationally reputed consultant(s) with following terms of references (TORs):
<ul>
<li>Identify the number and size of blocks to be auctioned considering the market situation</li>
<li>Recommend the most appropriate auction methodology and plan</li>
<li>Recommend the reserve price for auction</li>
<li>Design and management of auction process</li>
<li>Analyse potential impact on auction price with respect to upfront 
payment of the bid price versus staggered payment over five years and 
recommend the optimal bidding procedures</li>
<li>Develop a license template for new license</li>
<li>Any other allied matter relating to the auction and any assignments deemed necessary by PTA</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Reserve price of 1MHz will be finalized by the Federal Government after recipient of report from consultants.</li>
<li>All existing cellular mobile operators as well as new entrants will be eligible to participate in the auction</li>
<li>A new license for the provision of next generation mobile services will be issued to the successful bidders/auction winners.</li>
<li>The tenure of the new license will be 15 years.</li>
<li>For efficient and optimal rollout of next generation mobile 
services, cost-based sharing of infrastructure shall be considered as a 
matter of first priority by cellular operators at the time of rollout.</li>
<li>PTA shall prepare detailed guidelines for infrastructure sharing 
with the view to provide level-playing field to both existing as well as
 new entrant(s).</li>
<li>Existing licensee would provide National Roaming on request by any New Entrant(s) or as directed by PTA, as deemed appropriate.</li>
<li>Auction winners will encourage and facilitate local manufacturing, 
assembling and development of telecom equipment, terminal devices, 
applications, transfer of technology and Research & Innovation in 
Pakistan</li>
<li>Auction winners may deploy renewable energy sources as power back up.</li>
<li>The advisory committee shall be kept informed/updated by PTA 
regarding the progress of auction process and on tasks assigned to the 
consultant(s).</li>
<li>Recommendations brought forward by consultant(s) will be shared by 
advisory committee, which may review any provision contained in the 
policy directive.</li>
<li>With the issuance of this policy directive, the earlier policy directive for 3G license auction (issued on December 19th, 2011) stands suspended.</li>
</ul>
It maybe recalled that PTA has already published advertisement in international and national media to hire consultants.
 Last date for applying for the job is November 12th, 2013. It is likely
 that PTA will be able to select consultants around the last week of 
November.<br />
After appointment of consultants, one to two month period will be 
required to prepare IM, a document that will detail the procedure, 
methodology, price and other information on the auction.<br />
IM will also contain an auction date – likely to be one month after the issuance of IM.<br />
In simpler words, 3G auction date is still at least four months from now.</div>

The MoU was signed at Zong’s headquarters in Islamabad.<br />

Minister of State for IT and Telecom Ms. Anusha Rahman Khan has 
assured full government support and complete transparency to the 
prospective investors bidding for the upcoming spectrum auction of next 
generation mobile services in Pakistan. <br />

She stated this during her visit to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Headquarters today.

Secretary IT, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar, Acting Chairman PTA, Dr. Syed 
Ismail Shah, Member Finance PTA, Mr. Tariq Sultan, senior officers of 
MoIT&T and PTA were present on this occasion.
<br />
Ms. Anusha Rahman in her discussions assured PTA of her full 
support. She said that the Ministry has issued the spectrum auction 
policy and PTA must ensure a timely and successful auction.
<br />
On this occasion, Chairman PTA gave detailed presentation about 
different aspects of spectrum auction in Pakistan. The Minister was 
informed that PTA is making necessary arrangements for spectrum auction 
for next generation mobile networks in accordance with the Policy 
Directive.

PTA has constituted a team of senior officers who are working 
diligently to finalize different aspects of auction process under the 
supervision of the Authority.
<br />
The Minister was informed that to hire consultant(s) of 
international repute, an advertisement was also published in 
international and national media.
<br />
Chairman PTA informed that, with the launch of next generation 
service Pakistani cell phone subscribers will be able to transmit and 
receive high speed data through their mobile phones. High speed data 
means possibility of video calls, internet browsing and downloading at a
 much higher speed which also includes usage of data intensive 
applications.<br />

Mr. Faisal Sattar, the former CTO of Wateen Telecom, has been 
appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Universal Service Fund, we have 
confirmed with the sources.<br />
Appointment was made through a decision from high profile committee 
headed by Federal secretary Information and Technology and Telecom. The 
committee had submitted its shortlisted names to Ms. Anusha Rehman, the 
Minister for State, Information Technology and telecom.<br />
Other shortlisted names included Mr. Naveed Saeed, Aamir Ishaque and Dr. Muhammad Yasin.<br />

Mr. Sattar is likely to take charge in coming few days, however, the notification for his appointment has been issued.<br />
Faisal Sattar was lately the Chief Technical Officer of Wateen. He 
served the company for around three years. Previously he has worked with
 Mobilink and Alcatel Lucent (MEA).<br />
USF, with over Rs. 60 billion in its accounts, is considered to be a 
key organization to eliminate the digital divide in the country. With 
prolific performance during its first 3 years, company greatly suffered 
during last two years only due to managerial conflicts and abundance of 
politics.<br />
USF was long looking for a well versed professional to take control of day to day businesses at the company.</div>

This was decided during a meeting held in Islamabad. The meeting was 
chaired by Ms. Anusha Rehman, while other officials who attended the 
meeting include Mr. Akhlaq Tarrar, Secretary IT, Senior Officials from 
USF, and a team of senior officials from NADRA led by Mr. Tariq Malik 
Chairman, NADRA to further discuss the implementation of the Telecenter 
Project.<br />
During the meeting it was decided that Telecenters, so established, 
would offer several e-services such as e-health, e-learning, e-commerce,
 e-agriculture etc. to facilitate people of un-served, underserved and 
far flung areas.<br />
It is likely that telecenters will create local employment and 
entrepreneurship opportunities and extend broadband to provide distance 
education and ICT literacy.</div>

Nokia is going through the critical times. With the announcement of Nokia’s acquistion by Microsoft, executive decisions and
the innovation in Nokia products during next few months are going to leave
establishing impact on smartphone market.<br />
With the unveiling of six devices yesterday at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi, it is
determined that Nokia is taking on the competition in almost every segment. Company’s
newly announced tablet, the Nokia Lumia 2520 is already getting positive
reviews and is arguably said to be the best in the market.<br />
On one hand, Nokia brings along heritage, rich culture and large portfolio
of products while on the other hand its sole reliance on Windows Phone platform
– which is almost a necessity for them now – leaves countless questions
unanswered.<br />
During the Nokia World yesterday, RexHacker got the chance to  interact
with Mr. Stephen Elop, the head of Nokia Devices, to ask him about the current
strategies and future prospects of Nokia. We also talked about the
Nokia-Microsoft transaction. Here is the excerpt of our conversation:<br />
<b>RexHacker: What is Nokia’s strategy for emerging markets?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>Nokia is committed to enhance the mobile
experience of the people who are looking to get connected digitally for the
first time.<br />
Our heritage in low-cost devices come with amazing build quality,
unmatchable radio performance and crazy battery life; for example our phones
can remain without a charge for over a month or even 48 days in one particular
case.<br />
On top of that – at almost same price points – we have added Facebook,
WhatsApp and other similar apps to get the people beyond the basic calling and
text messaging.<br />
This is how people are ultimately getting their first digital experience on
a 2G network or probably a 3G network.<br />
Those with more digital demands can of course get to our Lumia series, Lumua
520 for instance. And I will not rule out the possibility of more Lumia devices
with lower price points.<br />
<b>RexHacker: Considering the prices of Nokia Asha phones, let alone
the Lumia series, there are manufacturers  — such as QMobile in Pakistan
or Micromax in India — that offer ridiculously low-priced smartphones at around
$60-$70 with Android experience. How is Nokia going to tackle that?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>I will tackle that with 60-70 dollar device that is
actually better designed, comes with more responsive touch screen, it has
better network capabilities and that offers longer battery of course. All these
features promise a wonderful experience for sure.<br />
See our approach is different. We carefully optimize the experience
according to the market conditions and the price points without compromising.<br />
You are definitely going to make compromises with experience when a vague
and huge operating system is squeezed into cheap hardware. That’s not what we
do!<br />
<b>RexHacker: Nokia is making Windows Phone devices for around three
years now, but the whole segment is still not profitable. Why a new backup plan
isn’t implemented?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>What we like about Windows Phone — and what
you have seen over the past few quarters — is the sales’ trend.<br />
That’s right, it’s not profitable but it was a very conscious decision. When
you are starting something new it’s obvious that you have to over-invest, you
have to put the money in.<br />
With time we are seeing the growth in sales. In fact we have hit 8 million
Lumia sales, up from mere 2.9 million sales just a few quarters ago.<br />
You see there is a momentum in the right direction.<br />
<b>RexHacker: With growing sales, as you have just mentioned, don’t you
think Nokia’s decision for Selling itself was too early?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>The part of the consideration is that you
look at the current pattern, forecasting the growth and the price opportunity
at a specific time. You have to make decisions that provide the greatest value
to the shareholders.<br />
After the announcement, the share price of Nokia has gone up significantly.
From the lowest-level — since the announcement — in July, the share price has
gone up 300 percent almost.<br />
When you put all the considerations together and shareholders get added
value on their investment then they say wow, you have done the right thing.<br />
<b>RexHacker: Going forward, what is going to happen with brand name of
Nokia after Microsoft’s acquistion? </b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>After the Nokia-Microsoft transaction, Nokia
brand is going to be owned by Nokia company and not by Microsoft. For a period
of 10 years, Nokia — as a brand name — will be licensed to Microsoft to use the
brand name for Asha and other low-end phones.<br />
For smartphones, this decision is yet to be made that what name, combination
of names or brand name would be used for the smartphones after the transaction.
This will be decided when both the companies will meet at a time set for that.<br />
Going forward, after 10 years, Microsoft will not use Nokia’s brand name for
its devices.<br />
Nokia will continue to be a company outside of Microsoft and will retain
rights to its brand and management thereof.<br />
Not to mention, Microsoft will continue to own the Microsoft brand and
Windows Phone brand.<br />
So in words, even after the Microsoft-Nokia transaction, hundreds of
thousands of Nokia outlets will keep carrying the Nokia branding and they will
keep selling Nokia phones like before till the end of licensed period.<br />
We are also looking at proper and intelligent channelization of our sales
network, where both Nokia and Microsoft distributors leverage each other.<br />
