Mobile Internet Usage in Pakistan to Overtake Desktop Internet in 2014: Study

Users accessing internet from their mobile devices will overtake the 
number of desktop internet users in 2014, predicts a study published by 
IDC and sponsored by Google.<br />

Study, that is based on survey of over 1,000 Pakistanis, revealed 
that desktop is dominant computing medium with 91 percent of respondents
 owning a PC at home. However, 45 percent of those also own a smartphone
 or tablet. 18 percent cite the latter as their primary device.<br />

Mobile devices are gaining momentum: 86 percent use PCs to access the
 Internet daily, 77 percent use smartphones, 73 percent use feature 
phones and 59 percent use tablets daily.<br />

This trend follows a decline in the prices of smartphones and tablets, and anticipated launch of 3G services.<br />

Survey report said that Internet-capable feature phones are expected to continue to play an important role.<br />

Report said that shift to mobile usage for accessing internet is also
 due to unreliability of the electricity supply which is also helping to
 promote the usage of tablets and smartphones in Pakistan.<br />

“We think 2014 is the year mobile Internet overtakes desktop Internet
 in Pakistan. Consumers are really starting to embrace smartphones and 
tablets,” said Tania Aidrus, Manager for Asian Growth Markets, Google 
Asia Pacific.<br />

Pakistani digital consumers are engaging more with the Internet than 
ever before: of those surveyed, 70 percent spend time daily on the 
Internet while 60 percent say it is also where they liked to spend most 
of their personal time.<br />

The study revealed that home is the preferred location for Internet 
access — even for mobile-only users, who prefer to use their home wi-fi 
connection. The average hours spent on the Internet are 2.25 hours a day
 on weekdays and 3 hours a day on weekends.<br />

The top three activities in Pakistan both on desktop and mobile 
Internet are: social media, email and general search. Interestingly, 
digital Pakistanis like to learn on their smartphones with educational 
content coming in fourth.<br />

Also popular on smartphones are online banking, researching financial
 services and investment, and bill payments — pointing to a near future 
where digitally literate Pakistanis make the Web work for them.<br />

The main challenge of Internet proliferation in Pakistan are the 
quality and reliability of connectivity — including poor speed or 
bandwidth availability, perceived value-for-money, customer service 
quality, limited choice of plans and frequency of service interruptions.
 The unreliability of the power supply is also a factor.<br />

With digital Pakistanis living more of their lives online, the main 
opportunities are related to the economic contribution of the Internet, 
especially for small-medium businesses, as well as nutritious and local 
Internet content: education, research, financial services.<br />

There are over 2 billion Internet users today. Throughout the 2000s, 
the Internet has been defined by developed countries, but it is now 
being defined by massive, developing countries like Pakistan.<br />

“Emerging markets are starting from mobile, so if we lower Internet 
access barriers to consumers, businesses and communities, then we can 
expect growth far more rapid than what we’re already seeing,” said 
Aidrus.<br />

As other markets have demonstrated, growth on the Internet encourages growth across the economy.<br />

More businesses online means more information for people and 
incentives to create better networks and content that better reflect 
local culture and needs. That will make the Internet more valuable and 
the economy stronger for Pakistan.</div>

Perhaps the most thrilling auto event of the capital city rocked 
Islamabad last Sunday. Glow-PakWheels Auto-show turned out to be the 
largest gathering of automobile enthusiasts in Pakistan.<br />

The two day show took place at 2F2F karting track in Rawal Lake which was attended by over 50,000 people.<br />

This extravaganza was aimed at nurturing the automotive industry in 
Pakistan, through a flashy event, where the young fans also gained 
insight on the hazards of street racing and reckless driving while it 
will also help portraying a positive image of the country 
internationally.<br />

While speaking on Glow by Warid & Pakwheels collaboration Mr. 
Suneel Sarfaraz Munj, Director Pakwheels said that Glow by Warid has 
always been a great support and we have organized number of successful 
events.<br />

Glow is perhaps the Pakistan’s most active brand which is doing a lot on-ground for youngsters, added Mr. Suneel.<br />

Windows 8 may not have been such a hit as Microsoft would’ve wanted 
but here’s something which would surely raise a lot of eyebrows: Windows
 7 is growing faster than Windows 8, even today!<br />

Last month, Windows 8′s market share actually dropped slightly, to 
6.66% from 7.53%, i.e. by around 0.87%. Windows 8.1 did however grew to 
0.92% leading to an overall market share of Windows 8 to 7.58% and 
combined increase of just 0.05%. While it must’ve captured some of the 
share of Windows 8, the figures are hardly impressive.

The worrying issue remains Windows 7. As a lot of companies 
continue to roll out Windows 7 running laptops, the operating system 
doesn’t only stubbornly stay around, but actually grows faster than the 
one which has succeeded it. In November, it grew by 0.22%, astonishing 
for a 4 year old OS, to 46.64%.

Older versions were experiencing usual scenarios. Windows Vista 
dropped by 0.06% while XP by a meagre 0.02%. At this rate, they’ll 
probably stay around forever, albeit in minute numbers.

Still, despite the unflattering numbers, Windows 8 does 
single-handedly trump all of the Mac OS X versions combined, which stood
 at 7.56%.</div>

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Federal Investigation 
Agency (FIA) jointly conducted a successful raid in Shareef Abad Mardan,
 and arrested two persons involved in illegal activation of SIMs. <br />

The SIMs were activated in bulk by a registered retailer of a 
Franchisee which belongs to one of the Cellular Mobile Companies. PTA 
didn’t name the cellular company.
<br />
During the raid on the premises, a statement said, SIM activators and voter lists were taken into custody by FIA team.
<br />
Two accused are in custody of FIA for further investigation. The 
action is expected to provide further lead to find such retailers/sale 
channels involved in illegal bulk SIM activation.
<br />
It is still unclear that how many bogus SIMs are being activated 
on daily basis by such retailers, just to meet the targets and to grab 
sales’ commissions.
<br />
It maybe recalled that cellular companies have started to verify 
customers through Biometric Verification System in Karachi. Similar kind
 of verifications will be implemented throughout Pakistan with-in a 
year.
<br />
However, till the time of deployment of Biometric Verification 
System at each sales point, bulk and bogus SIM activation is likely to 
remain the top business for retailers and franchises.</div>

Mobilink Infinity, a WiMAX broadband operator and part of Broadband 
Division of Mobilink, is planning to wrap up its operations in Pakistan,
 we have confirmed with sources.<br />
A highly placed source who wanted to remain unnamed told RexHacker
 that company has handed over its entire WiMAX customers’ base to Qubee 
to finally quit the business.<br />
As a result a total of 15,000 WiMAX customers – all from Karachi – were transferred to Qubee.<br />
While we aren’t sure about the future of high-ups of Mobilink 
Infinity, the low to mid level staff — including the sales department — 
is likely to see the exit doors.<br />

Mobilink, earlier this year, closed Link Dot Net – the DSL broadband arm of the group – citing tough market situation.<br />
Now with the closure of Mobilink Infinity, the broadband division of 
Mobilink is all freed up and is likely to shift its entire focus to 3G 
data services.<br />
We had seen this coming almost an year ago, (or even before that)
 not only due to success of EvDO as a technology (as compared to WiMAX) 
but also due to lack of funding from parent groups of WiMAX operators.<br />
WiMAX operators currently hold over 550,000 broadband customers or 20
 percent of entire broadband subscriptions. However, WiMAX subscriptions
 are only declining with time.<br />
With the exit of Mobilink Infinity from the market, the regulator 
will have to start evaluating its option for saving the troubled WiMAX 
industry.</div>
