Windows 8 may not have been such a hit as Microsoft would’ve wanted 
but here’s something which would surely raise a lot of eyebrows: Windows
 7 is growing faster than Windows 8, even today!<br />

Last month, Windows 8′s market share actually dropped slightly, to 
6.66% from 7.53%, i.e. by around 0.87%. Windows 8.1 did however grew to 
0.92% leading to an overall market share of Windows 8 to 7.58% and 
combined increase of just 0.05%. While it must’ve captured some of the 
share of Windows 8, the figures are hardly impressive.

The worrying issue remains Windows 7. As a lot of companies 
continue to roll out Windows 7 running laptops, the operating system 
doesn’t only stubbornly stay around, but actually grows faster than the 
one which has succeeded it. In November, it grew by 0.22%, astonishing 
for a 4 year old OS, to 46.64%.

Older versions were experiencing usual scenarios. Windows Vista 
dropped by 0.06% while XP by a meagre 0.02%. At this rate, they’ll 
probably stay around forever, albeit in minute numbers.
<br />
Still, despite the unflattering numbers, Windows 8 does 
single-handedly trump all of the Mac OS X versions combined, which stood
 at 7.56%.</div>

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Federal Investigation 
Agency (FIA) jointly conducted a successful raid in Shareef Abad Mardan,
 and arrested two persons involved in illegal activation of SIMs. <br />

The SIMs were activated in bulk by a registered retailer of a 
Franchisee which belongs to one of the Cellular Mobile Companies. PTA 
didn’t name the cellular company.
<br />
During the raid on the premises, a statement said, SIM activators and voter lists were taken into custody by FIA team.
<br />
Two accused are in custody of FIA for further investigation. The 
action is expected to provide further lead to find such retailers/sale 
channels involved in illegal bulk SIM activation.
<br />
It is still unclear that how many bogus SIMs are being activated 
on daily basis by such retailers, just to meet the targets and to grab 
sales’ commissions.
<br />
It maybe recalled that cellular companies have started to verify 
customers through Biometric Verification System in Karachi. Similar kind
 of verifications will be implemented throughout Pakistan with-in a 
year.
<br />
However, till the time of deployment of Biometric Verification 
System at each sales point, bulk and bogus SIM activation is likely to 
remain the top business for retailers and franchises.</div>

Mobilink Infinity, a WiMAX broadband operator and part of Broadband 
Division of Mobilink, is planning to wrap up its operations in Pakistan,
 we have confirmed with sources.<br />
A highly placed source who wanted to remain unnamed told RexHacker
 that company has handed over its entire WiMAX customers’ base to Qubee 
to finally quit the business.<br />
As a result a total of 15,000 WiMAX customers – all from Karachi – were transferred to Qubee.<br />
While we aren’t sure about the future of high-ups of Mobilink 
Infinity, the low to mid level staff — including the sales department — 
is likely to see the exit doors.<br />

Mobilink, earlier this year, closed Link Dot Net – the DSL broadband arm of the group – citing tough market situation.<br />
Now with the closure of Mobilink Infinity, the broadband division of 
Mobilink is all freed up and is likely to shift its entire focus to 3G 
data services.<br />
We had seen this coming almost an year ago, (or even before that)
 not only due to success of EvDO as a technology (as compared to WiMAX) 
but also due to lack of funding from parent groups of WiMAX operators.<br />
WiMAX operators currently hold over 550,000 broadband customers or 20
 percent of entire broadband subscriptions. However, WiMAX subscriptions
 are only declining with time.<br />
With the exit of Mobilink Infinity from the market, the regulator 
will have to start evaluating its option for saving the troubled WiMAX 
industry.</div>

Warid Telecom and Telenor Pakistan have announced successful 
deployment of Biometric Verification System at their respective Customer
 Care Centres and Franchises.<br />

Previously, Zong, Ufone and <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/11/mobilink-rolls-out-biometric.html" target="_blank">Mobilink</a> had also announced similar deployments at their service centres and franchises in Karachi.<br />

It maybe recalled that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had 
mandated cellular operators to deploy biometric verification system for 
issuance of new SIMs.<br />

During the first phase, biometric verification system was deployed in
 Karachi while rest of the Pakistan will get this verification system by
 month end.<br />

Biometric Verification System will cross check customers’ 
fingerprints for authentication against their CNIC data held with NADRA.
 After verification of the authenticity of the CNIC holder, the SIM will
 be activated against customers name.<br />

Telenor’s CEO, Lars Christian Iuel, CEO, Telenor Pakistan has said 
that Biometric Verification System will help his company to address the 
issue of unregistered SIMs and prevent the irregular use of cellular 
connections.<br />

Mr. Lars thanked Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Ministry of 
Information and Technology, National Database and Registration Authority
 (NADRA) and the Ministry of Interior for helping us in this process.<br />

Mr. Muhammad Amjad, Regional Head Franchise & Distribution, Warid
 Telecom, on the occasion said that Warid considers implementation of 
policies and regulations of national benefit as top priority, especially
 in the wake of the security situation of our country.<br />

Mr. Amjad emphasized that Warid, as a responsible telecommunication 
organization, has taken the step to implement Biometric Verification

Not long ago, <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/09/jolla-phone-compatible-with-android.html" target="_blank">we told you about the Jolla phone</a>, made by a company out of Finland run by ex-Nokia employees, who took over the abandoned Meego platform of the company.<br />

Now, after months of wait, the phone is finally being put up for sale
 for about $550. That’s around 60,000 in Pakistani rupees which is 
understandably a lot.<br />

The team, however, says that it has been overwhelmed by the reaction 
which the product has been getting up till now. According to them, 
they’ve secured orders from more than 130 countries so that alone says a
 lot regarding the kind of support and following Meego still garners.<br />

Of course, Meego is dead, but from its ashes the Sailfish OS running 
on the Jolla phone has risen. The Android-compatible mobile operating 
system – meaning that it can run Android apps — is based on Linux and 
takes a lot of inspiration from its former self.<br />

It is gesture-based, to begin with, and there are no physical keys on
 the front of the phone, just like on the N9. Swiping from the bottom 
opens up the notifications, swiping from the top closes apps (or locks 
from the homescreen) while doing the same thing from the sides takes you
 to the homescreen.<br />

The center-point of all this will be the ‘other half’. The back cover
 of the Jolla, expands from providing just protection and cover to 
having much wider reach and impact.<br />

It customizes software to an incredible extent. The average covers 
change just the color schemes but much more will be coming as the 
community expands. Artists will come out with their own back covers 
which will provide customization to the OS, there might even be covers 
with a larger LED Flash, batteries and even a physical QWERTY keyboard!<br />

Apart from that, the phone comes with rather subpar specs: A 4.5 inch
 ‘Estrada’ qHD display, a 1.4Ghz dual-core SnapDragon 400 processor, 8 
megapixel camera on the back and 1 GB RAM.<br />

The ‘Estrada’ is the name given to the vertical experience which the 
Jolla provides. You get the application store, pre-installed apps and 
lockscreen all linearly from the lockscreen, considerably cutting down 
time.<br />

Of course, no one can recommend to jump the boat and dump your 
current phone just yet but if the community gets the momentum going, who
 knows, the race to the top may be a 4-horse affair.</div>
