‘Think Pink’ is a joint campaign of Warid and Shaukat Khanum Memorial
 Cancer Hospital and Research Centre that is aimed at creating awareness
 on breast cancer, its symptoms and early diagnosis.<br />

Studies have shown that early detection of breast cancer can result 
in a survival rate of over 90%. Unfortunately, Pakistan has the highest 
incidence of breast cancer in Asia. Although it is a completely curable 
form of Cancer if diagnosed timely and as in most of the critical cases 
reported, the patients were unable to identify the problem just because 
of not being aware of it.<br />

Warid’s female staff were trained to volunteer to spread the ‘Think Pink’ thought.<br />

After coming under fire in recent times from both public and 
governments for not making the internet safer, Google, with the help of 
Microsoft’s ‘picture detection technology’ has announced that it will be
 taking some drastic steps to free the internet off of sexual child 
imagery.<br />

The companies’ Eric Schmidt announced the new measures in an opinion 
piece on Monday, and said that around a hundred thousand such webpages 
have already been wiped out. He also announced that the search engine 
now displays new warning signals upon accessing another 13,000 
potentially inappropriate webpages. Those obviously make it clear to the
 user, if they’re not that already, that such activity is purely illegal
 and unethical.<br />

In order to counter such a widespread problem, Schmidt told that his 
company has already employed a staff of as much as 200 people. The staff
 personally reviews every single reported image because, as Schmidt 
says, computers aren’t reliable enough to do this job on their own.<br />

He also reiterated this fact that while Google is doing its utmost to
 make the internet a safer and more accessible place, the rate at which 
this inappropriate stuff is finding its way on the web is increasing at 
an alarming rate too. They, however, want all the people regardless of 
their location to understand the message and due to that the changes 
will be implemented in more than 150 languages.<br />

Cellular mobile operators had to bear a collective revenue loss of 
Rs. 1.8 billion for shutting down the services in over 80 cities on 9th 
and 10th of Moharram.<br />

Initial estimates suggest that around 100 million customers were impacted with the network closure.<br />

It maybe recalled that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had 
directed all operators to shut down cellular and wireless services in 
over 80 cities including all major cities in Punjab, KPK and Sindh. 
Balochistan, this time, remained online throughout the weekend.<br />

Rawalpindi, and its over 10 million mobile phone users, remained 
offline for four consecutive days, the longest black-out in the history 
of the city.<br />

Based on the market share of telecom companies, the individual revenue loss of operators is as following:<br />

<li>Telenor: Rs. 470 Million</li>
<li>Ufone: Rs. 360 Million</li>
<li>Zong: Rs. 220 Million</li>
<li>Warid: Rs. 180 Million</li>

In addition to Rs. 1.8 billion loss to telecom companies, government itself had to bear around Rs. 610 million loss in taxes.<br />

As per limited data provided by telecom companies, customers also had
 to incur an estimated airtime loss of Rs. 100 million under the head of
 line-rent, SMS, voice and internet bundles that they had purchased in 
advance but couldn’t utilize the services due to network closure.<br />

It seems as if those days have finally arrived when we would be 
buying inexpensive Android smartphones with top-notch specs. Motorola 
Moto G is certainly one of the first such phones which, regardless of 
the price, promises first-class experience.<br />

The younger sibling of the widely-acclaimed Moto X,
 the Moto G comes with a 4.5″ display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection on
 top. The design is undeniably inspired from the Moto X and there’s 
nothing bad in it.<br />

Back-cover is removable but there’s no SD card or removable battery so back-covers are purely for customization.<br />

Hardware is what you would expect to be getting at this price point. 
You find a Qualcomm SnapDragon 400 chipset with 1.2Ghz quad-core Cortex 
A7 CPU, Adreno 305 Graphics and 1 GB of RAM. Storage options are either 8
 or 16 GB but both are non-expandable. Motorola will also be releasing a
 dual-sim variant of the Moto G in the future.<br />

The camera on the back isn’t as exciting though. It’s a 5 megapixel 
unit with 720p video and Flash. A 1.3 mp camera can be found on the 
front. Connectivity is done through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, FM Radio, GPS,
 3G and microUSB. Battery capacity is 1,950 mAh which does sound small 
on paper but Motorola says it is optimized to offer a 30% longer talk 
time than Apple’s iPhone 5s.<br />

Rather embarrassing for Motorola, which is a Google company, the 
phone launches with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean but KitKat will be coming in 
January. It is also vanilla.<br />

Being inspired from the Moto X, the Moto G also comes with a plethora
 of exchangeable back-covers, 19 to be precise. But forget the features 
and start thinking about its price.<br />

The Motorola Moto G starts at $179 for the 8 GB version and $199 when
 you double the storage to 16 GB. That’s aggressive pricing, whichever 
way you look at it since almost no Android phones with such hardware are
 found at this price point, well, unless if its Chinese.<br />

Looking at its competition, we see Ashas, Lumias and cheap Androids, 
all of which seem a bit half-baked compared to the Moto G in one way or 
the other. But then again, the paper isn’t everything, is it?<br />

The phone will be available worldwide starting from January 2014.<br />

Cellular companies are now directed to start rolling out Biometric 
system for SIM verifications immediately, sources told RexHacker.<br />
As per revised schedule, cellular mobile companies are asked to 
complete the deployment of biometric verification system — starting with
 companies-owned customer services centres and franchises — by December 
1st, 2013 in Karachi and across Pakistan by December 20th, 2013.<br />
This was decided during a high-level meeting, chaired by Secretary Interior, last week.<br />
According to the information we have got, cellular companies are now 
given the option of purchasing the equipment – used for biometric 
verification of customers — from the vendor of their choice.<br />
However, there are only two vendors in Pakistan offering the 
biometric verification solution, one of which is owned by son of a 
former Chairman NADRA.<br />
Sources told RexHacker that equipment for biometric verification –
 to be installed at Service Centres and Franchises – is going to cost 
around $90. This solution will include a thumb scanner and will come 
without computer/tablet and internet connectivity. Since all service 
centres and franchises are already equipped with computers and internet 
connectivity, hence this simple scanner will do the job.<br />
The thumb impression of subscriber will be matched with NADRA’s 
database in real-time to make sure that CNIC holder is indeed the person
 he/she is claiming to be. After verification of thumb impression and 
the customer, a SIM will be issued to the purchaser.<br />
The other kind of biometric equipment, that will come with scanner, 
computer/tablet terminal and internet connectivity – to be deployed on 
retail outlets – will cost around $350 to $400.<br />

It merits mentioning here that cellular companies will collectively 
work-out to equip retail outlets with biometric solution, as retailers 
usually sell SIMs of almost every operator. It is heard that USF will 
assist cellular companies in subsidizing the equipment for biometric 
verification of customers.<br />
Moreover, 789 SIM activation system – in practice since January 2009 for activation of new SIMs – will be closed for ever.<br />
Telecom industry of Pakistan is long struggling with un-registered 
and un-verified SIMs. All regulatory and industry efforts made so far 
have proven insufficient to get rid of unregistered SIMs from the 
market.<br />
For readers’ reference, here are the steps taken by the government 
and regulator during last few years for curbing illegal and unregistered
 SIMs:<br />

Despite all these steps and blockade of millions of SIMs, the issue 
of unregistered and illegal SIMs remain unresolved. Telcos think that 
concerned authorities should have taken their time in deciding the 
methodology and procedures of the biometric system so that the process 
is made cent percent fool proof.<br />
Analysts anticipate that biometric verification system will also fail unless complete cellular base, including existing subscribers, is not verified again.<br />
Despite apparent flaws, <a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/09/exclusive-telcos-agree-to-deploy.html" target="_blank">cellular companies agreed to deploy biometric system</a> amid increasing pressure from law-enforcement agencies, Interior Ministry, PTA and the courts.<br />
It won’t be out of place to mention here that Peshawar High Court 
went to its length and issued arrest orders of CEOs of telecom companies
 for not eliminating unregistered SIMs. Resultantly, one CEO of a 
telecom company had to operate from Thailand for over a week.<br />

Mobile Phone Users in Pakistan Reach 129.6 Million

Mobile phone users in Pakistan reached 129.6 million at the end of 
September 2013, said a statistical report published by Pakistan 
Telecommunication Authority.<br />

Cellular teledensity reached all-time high level of 72.27 percent, up from 71.78 percent in July 2013.<br />

Total cellular subscribers’ count stood at 129,583,076 with Mobilink 
topping the market at 37.37 million subscribers. Telenor recorded 32.34 
million subscribers while Ufone said that it had 24.80 million 
subscribers at the end of September 2013.<br />

Zong is fast catching the Ufone with 22.28 million customers, while 
Warid managed to grab 12.79 million customers at the end of Q3 2013.<br />

All cellular companies added a combined 649,414 customers during the 
quarter. This includes a huge data clean-up activity exercised by 
Telenor (accounting over 1.45 million subscribers) during July and 
August 2013.<br />

Zong added around 1.2 million subscribers, thanks to its FOC (free of
 cost) SIM strategy. Moreover, just to add, Zong remains the only 
operator to not to follow 5 SIMs on 1 CNIC rule. It is worth mentioning here that a huge number of Zong customers void their SIMs after using the free minutes and SMS.<br />

Ufone and Mobilink added around 250K customers while Warid fetched 84K new customers during the quarter.<br />
