Avast! Free Antivirus 2014 is avast!'s latest malware-hunting engine.<br />

Installation is fast, perhaps due to a major reduction in product 
size. Compatibility seems good, too, with the package running happily 
alongside Norton Internet Security on our test PC.<br />

Scans can apparently be much faster, for some file types at least; in
 terms of in-memory scan times, EXE files are now checked around twice 
as quickly, text contents (web pages, scripts) are up to 10x faster. 
(The program still needs to load this content in the first place, 
though, so final scan times won't change very much.)<br />

There are several important improvements to avast's protection 
features. You get enhanced streaming updates for real-time detections; a
 new DeepScreen technology helps the program make smarter decisions 
about unknown files; extended cloud scanning again assists in detection;
 and if something does turn up, then improved cleaning will get rid of 
it more reliably.<br />

Still not enough? A new "Hardened" mode can be set up to run only 
known safe programs. It's a little drastic but can work well for 
inexperienced users (see Settings > Antivirus > Hardened Mode to 
set this up).<br />

shields to worry about, for instance).<br />

Please note, the program will by default install Google Toolbar. If 
that's not what you want, pay attention during setup and clear the 
relevant checkbox when it appears.<br />

The websites of two popular Tamil television channels, including ‘<a href="http://rexhacker.blogspot.com/2013/11/puthiyathalaimurai-website-hacked-by.html" target="_blank">Puthiya Thalaimurai</a>,’ were hacked on Saturday.</div>

 Haxors Crew (PHC), the group that allegedly hacked the AIADMK party 
website on November 2, has claimed responsibility for this as well in a 
posting made on the defaced homepages.</div>

The management of ‘Puthiya Thalaimurai’ channel has lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police.</div>
<div class="body">
When
 this reporter visitedwww.sunnetwork.in, the homepage of the Sun Group 
was also found defaced (photo). The homepage of all the three websites 
looked similar, giving room to suspicion that the same group was 
involved.</div>

The suspects said on the defaced homepage 
that they wanted justice and peace. They also wanted the release of the 
“innocent kid,” in an apparent reference to P. Eswaran (27) of Bangalore
 who was arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Chennai 
Police, on charges of attempting to hack into the AIADMK party website.</div>
<div class="body">
Additional
 Commissioner of Police (CCB) R.S. Nallasivam said Eswaran was not the 
real hacker. But he had made at least 300 attempts to enter the 
administrator’s account of the AIADMK party website.</div>

“He
 admitted to have made several attempts to hack into the party website. 
We seized the laptop and other tools used to commit the offence. Efforts
 are on to apprehend the suspects who actually hacked these websites…we 
have sought the assistance of Anna University, National Informatics 
Centre and others in the investigation,” he told
<i>The Hindu</i>
. Hours after their website was hacked, ‘Puthiya Thalaimurai’ put up a 
homepage saying that the portal was undergoing technical upgrade and 
would be back soon.</div>

 did not have adequate security systems to prevent hackers…but the fact

The last few days I’ve been playing around with Softmath’s product for 
helping students learn algebra: Algebrator. There seems to be a lot 
of curiosity about this product, so I wanted to do an Algebrator review 
to let my readers know what the product about. As of the writing of this
 review, it costs $58.99, a reasonable cost for software of this type, 
but enough that you’ll probably want to know a little more about the 
software before investing in it. Softmath was willing to provide me a 
full version of the software for review purposes.<br />

What I Like about Algebrator</h2>
There’s a lot to like with Algebrator. While it has a lot of 
capabilities, allowing it to be used as a scientific calculator, 
graphing calculator, CAS calculator and more, there were two areas that I
 think most students will use it for.<br />

The first is the ability to input problems and see them solved step 
by step. When you input a problem into Algebrator, it will use it’s CAS 
calculator to work the problem out, step by step. Trust me when I say, 
they are worked out in incredible detail. In some cases, there were more
 steps than I would care to see. However, I am glad that if that given 
the choice, the developers of Algebrator went with more detail rather 
than less as students can often be confused by “skipped steps.” Students
 can also click on any step for an explanation of how the software 
calculated the step if they are confused.<br />

The other main capability of Algebrator that I would point out are 
the “Wizards.” The programmers at Softmath have created a list of 
questions students are likely to encounter in high school math, and 
created a long list of ready made templates to solve them. Many, but not
 all of them, involve coordinate geometry. The headings in the Wizard 
area of the software are:<br />

<li>Ellipse</li>
<li>Graphing</li>
<li>Basic Operations with Numbers</li>
<li>Pre-Algebra</li>
<li>Polynomials</li>

<li>Geometry and Trigonometry</li>
<li>Statistics</li>
</ul>
How do Wizards work? As an example, within the Line menu, there are 
options to find intercepts of a line, the slope between to points, the 
equations of parallel/perpendicular lines through a point among many, 
many others. You just provide the relevant points and lines, and 
Algebrator will show you how to find the solution to the problem. By my 
quick count, there were nearly 80 Wizards within the sub-menus listed 
above. In my opinion, these Wizards are the strongest selling point of 
the software.<br />

<h2>
What Algebrator Is Not</h2>
Algebrator is true to its Algebra name. If you’re looking for a 
product with Calculus abilities, this isn’t it. On the other hand, there
 are quite a few functions of the software that could be classified as 
Pre-Calculus. Algebrator has the ability to work with matrices, logs, 
and trig functions, although I did find its trig abilities to be a bit 
limited (it handles numbers well enough but won’t simplify trig 
identities). I also really like some of the “Wizards” that were 
available to solve for conic sections as a Pre-Calculus tool.<br />

I would highly recommend this software primarily for Pre-Algebra, 
Algebra I, and Algebra II students. There are also some pretty cool 
features that would make it appeal to Pre-Calculus students. The right 
kind of Pre-Calculus student could actually get quite a bit of mileage 
out of it. I wouldn’t recommend it beyond Pre-Calculus, though.<br />

<h2>
Bottom Line Algebrator Review</h2>
If all you’re looking for is a way for your child to check their answers, Wolfram Alpha still
 can’t be beat. It’s free and can do a lot of really high level stuff 
that Algebrator can’t. However, don’t expect it to do all the Wizards of
 Algebrator can. It’s capable of some of them, but certainly not all.<br />

Additionally, for a very reasonable cost, Algebrator is far more than
 an answer checker. It’s designed to demonstrate how problems can be 
solved step by step. I haven’t seen many resources that can do that, and
 the few that do aren’t as polished and easy to use as Algebrator. If 
you are looking for a way to walk students through answers in simple 
steps with concise explanations, Algebrator is top notch. I recommend 
you head over to <a href="http://softmath.com/adv/techmath.html" rel="nofollow">Softmath.com</a> to
 check out Algebrator. Additionally, you may want to check out the video
 I created below demonstrating some of its capabilities.<br />

The pakistani hacker who initially posted  about the defaces is still active.<br /><br />Though Eswaran was only trying to protect the website what he did is still illegal under section 66 of the IT Act . It would be very interesting to see how this case would play in court since it is the first of its kind.</div>

There are two (legal) methods that you can use to change the product 
key with volume licensing media after installation. You can use either 
the Windows Activation Wizard graphical user interface (GUI) or a 
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) script.<br />

The easier method to use is the Use the Activation Wizard method. Use
 this method when you only have a few computers on which to change the 
product key. The Use a Script method is best when you have a number of

Method #2: Use a Script</h3>
You can create a WMI script that changes the volume licensing product
 key, and then deploy this script in a startup script. The sample 
ChangeVLKey2600.vbs script and the sample ChangeVLKeySP1 script that are
 described in this section use the new volume licensing key that you 
want to enter, in its five-part alphanumeric form, as a single argument.
 Microsoft recommends that you use the ChangeVLKey2600.vbs script on 
Windows XP-based computers that are not running SP1 and that you use the
 ChangeVLKeySP1.vbs script on Windows XP-based computers that are 
running SP1. These scripts perform the following functions:<br />

<li>They remove the hyphen characters (-) from the five-part alphanumeric product key.</li>
<li>They create an instance of the win32_WindowsProductActivation class.
 They call the SetProductKey method with the new volume licensing 
product key.</li>
</ol>
You can create a batch file or a CMD file that uses either of the 
following sample scripts, together with the new product key as an 
argument, and either deploy it as part of a startup script or run it 
from the command line to change the product key on a single computer.<br />

    Like Windows 2000, XP makes extensive use of the Microsoft ACPI (Advanced 
    Configuration & Power Interface), which relies heavily on your system BIOS 
    (Basic Input / Output System).  Many slightly older systems may not be 
    set up to take advantage of ACPI functionality, so it's worth checking with 
    your motherboard and/or peripheral vendor to see if an ACPI compliant BIOS 
    upgrade exists for your hardware. </span></div>

    comprehensive hardware database, so there's a fairly good chance that a

    drivers, so it's important to make sure that anything you are going to 
    download is XP compatible.</span></div>

    text mode.</span></b><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"><br />
    Starting an XP install is relatively simple. The CD-Rom containing the 
    installation files is self booting, and provided you have set your boot 
    priority in the BIOS to attempt boot from CD-Rom first, you should be up and 
    running within a few seconds!  If your hard disk contains a previous 
    OS, such as Windows 98, you will be given the opportunity to either boot 
    from the CD, or from your hard disk. If not, the XP installer goes directly 
    to this screen first :</span></div>

    drivers from floppy disk prior to install.  XP natively supports, for 
    example, the Highpoint HPT370 Raid Controller, yet it does not support the 
    Promise FastTrak Lite controller used in many systems such as the MSI 
    K7T266Pro2-RU.  If you do not install drivers at this stage for an 
    unsupported RAID controller, you will get a third of the way through the 
    install before XP crashes with an "Inaccessible Boot Device" error.</span></div>

    this point, and XP will automatically partition the hard disk, and designate 
    it as the drive that will be used.  If on the other hand, you would 
    like to split the disk space into two or more parts (partitions), then you 
    should press <b><C></b> to manually designate partition sizes.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">3. Creating custom 
    partitions using the XP installer.</span></b><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"><br />
    In the following example, we are going to split the new 10gb hard disk into 
    2 separate but equal sized partitions, which will ultimately become our <b>
    C: </b>& <b>D:</b> drives.</span></div>

    specify custom partitions, we are presented with the following screen :

    5gb partition to be used for our startup or boot drive, and another 5gb

    at this point, as you will have to tell the XP installer what size the 
    partition will be in <b>megabytes.  </b>If you simply wish to use 50% 
    of the disk capacity for the boot drive then take the overall disk size, 
    which in this case is <b>10229 megabytes</b>, and divide by two.  If 
    you intend to specify, for instance a 4gb partition for XP to live on, then 
    you must multiply the number of gigabytes required by <b>1024.  </b>
    This may seem strange, but 1 gigabyte is actually 1024 megabytes.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">At this point, you may be 
    wondering why the disk size at the top of the screen says one thing, and the 
    value just above the grey box has a smaller figure.  The installer can 
    see the entire size of the hard disk, but such factors as cluster size, and 
    file system overhead can marginally change that value.  Before you go 
    stomping back to the poor guy who sold you the hard disk, complaining 
    bitterly, be aware, all file systems will do this.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">Another point to note is that 
    the figure you enter into the grey box in megabytes may be changed to a 
    small degree by the installer.  Again, this is down to cluster size, so 
    don't panic if your figures don't exactly tally up.</span></div>

    5120 megabyte</b> partition that we specified has been changed slightly :</span></div>

    that the drive letter have juggled themselves into a more orderly fashion.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">4. Formatting your drives.</span></b><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"><br />
    After you have made your partitions, whether it be a single one using the 
    entire disk capacity, or multiple ones, you will need to decide which drive 
    to install XP to.  It is common practice to use the C: drive, as most 
    software will want to install there, and it saves an awful lot of confusion 
    later on.  In addition to this, you may find that if you install XP 
    onto a different drive, some software may not work properly!</span></div>

    formatting options.</span></div>

    format the drive so that other operating systems such as Windows 98 can use 
    it, I would recommend formatting with NTFS.  The NTFS file system is a 
    more secure, stable & optimised file system than FAT or FAT32, and despite 
    XP's ability to use FAT/32 I do not believe that either are as well suited 
    in terms of reliability or performance.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">Once you have decided which 
    file system you are going to use, you can format the disk either 
    conventionally, or using the quick option.  If you are sure that the 
    disk is reliable and does not contain any bad sectors, using the quick 
    format can save you quite a bit of time.  If on the other hand, you are 
    unsure of the drive's integrity, or the disk is new, I recommend using the 
    conventional (but slow) format.  It may take some time to 
    conventionally format a drive, but it may save you a lot of heartache later 
    on. </span></div>

    at this point, don't panic.... this file is huge, and can take a long time

    completed, your machine will reboot.  It is not necessary to remove the 
    installation CD at this point.  </span></div>

    part of installation will start.  The machine will continue to copy 
    files from the CD, and generally configure XP.  Expect to wait some

    to the above screen, you need to click on the drop down box located at the 
    top of the window, and select your preferred layout.  If you don't do 
    this, XP will start up with a US keyboard by default.  It isn't a big 
    problem to change this later, but you might as well set it right to begin 
    with!</span></div>

    the un-necessary US keyboard layout, but unfortunately the installer wont 
    let you, since it is presently using it.</span></div>

    preferences, click 'Apply' to save the changes, and 'OK' to return to the 
    previous screen.</span></div>

    installer will ask is your Name and Organisation Details :</span></div>

    substituting letters for numbers is so that unauthorised persons wishing to 
    gain access to the admin functions of your machine will have a substantially 
    harder time getting in if they cant spell the password the way you have.  
    The administrator account on your machine is very powerful, and any 
    unauthorised person gaining access to your machine (either in your absence 
    or via the internet) using that account can do a great deal of harm.</span></div>

    the machine name, and your password, you will be asked to set your date, 
    time & time zone, relative to GMT :</span></div>

    connected to a LAN (local area network), XP will give you the option of 
    selecting either typical settings or custom.  If your machine is part 
    of an office, or small home network, it is usually perfectly acceptable to 
    select typical settings, as XP can normally work out your settings for you.  
    If in doubt, ask your system administrator for applicable settings.</span></div>

    home, or is stand alone, it is not necessary to set a workgroup name.  
    As an example here, we have made this machine a member of the 'Bitbendertech'
