Nokia is going through the critical times. With the announcement of Nokia’s acquistion by Microsoft, executive decisions and
the innovation in Nokia products during next few months are going to leave
establishing impact on smartphone market.<br />
With the unveiling of six devices yesterday at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi, it is
determined that Nokia is taking on the competition in almost every segment. Company’s
newly announced tablet, the Nokia Lumia 2520 is already getting positive
reviews and is arguably said to be the best in the market.<br />
On one hand, Nokia brings along heritage, rich culture and large portfolio
of products while on the other hand its sole reliance on Windows Phone platform
– which is almost a necessity for them now – leaves countless questions
unanswered.<br />
During the Nokia World yesterday, RexHacker got the chance to  interact
with Mr. Stephen Elop, the head of Nokia Devices, to ask him about the current
strategies and future prospects of Nokia. We also talked about the
Nokia-Microsoft transaction. Here is the excerpt of our conversation:<br />
<b>RexHacker: What is Nokia’s strategy for emerging markets?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>Nokia is committed to enhance the mobile
experience of the people who are looking to get connected digitally for the
first time.<br />
Our heritage in low-cost devices come with amazing build quality,
unmatchable radio performance and crazy battery life; for example our phones
can remain without a charge for over a month or even 48 days in one particular
case.<br />
On top of that – at almost same price points – we have added Facebook,
WhatsApp and other similar apps to get the people beyond the basic calling and
text messaging.<br />
This is how people are ultimately getting their first digital experience on
a 2G network or probably a 3G network.<br />
Those with more digital demands can of course get to our Lumia series, Lumua
520 for instance. And I will not rule out the possibility of more Lumia devices
with lower price points.<br />
<b>RexHacker: Considering the prices of Nokia Asha phones, let alone
the Lumia series, there are manufacturers  — such as QMobile in Pakistan
or Micromax in India — that offer ridiculously low-priced smartphones at around
$60-$70 with Android experience. How is Nokia going to tackle that?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>I will tackle that with 60-70 dollar device that is
actually better designed, comes with more responsive touch screen, it has
better network capabilities and that offers longer battery of course. All these
features promise a wonderful experience for sure.<br />
See our approach is different. We carefully optimize the experience
according to the market conditions and the price points without compromising.<br />
You are definitely going to make compromises with experience when a vague
and huge operating system is squeezed into cheap hardware. That’s not what we
do!<br />
<b>RexHacker: Nokia is making Windows Phone devices for around three
years now, but the whole segment is still not profitable. Why a new backup plan
isn’t implemented?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>What we like about Windows Phone — and what
you have seen over the past few quarters — is the sales’ trend.<br />
That’s right, it’s not profitable but it was a very conscious decision. When
you are starting something new it’s obvious that you have to over-invest, you
have to put the money in.<br />
With time we are seeing the growth in sales. In fact we have hit 8 million
Lumia sales, up from mere 2.9 million sales just a few quarters ago.<br />
You see there is a momentum in the right direction.<br />
<b>RexHacker: With growing sales, as you have just mentioned, don’t you
think Nokia’s decision for Selling itself was too early?</b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>The part of the consideration is that you
look at the current pattern, forecasting the growth and the price opportunity
at a specific time. You have to make decisions that provide the greatest value
to the shareholders.<br />
After the announcement, the share price of Nokia has gone up significantly.
From the lowest-level — since the announcement — in July, the share price has
gone up 300 percent almost.<br />
When you put all the considerations together and shareholders get added
value on their investment then they say wow, you have done the right thing.<br />
<b>RexHacker: Going forward, what is going to happen with brand name of
Nokia after Microsoft’s acquistion? </b><br />
<b>Stephen Elop: </b>After the Nokia-Microsoft transaction, Nokia
brand is going to be owned by Nokia company and not by Microsoft. For a period
of 10 years, Nokia — as a brand name — will be licensed to Microsoft to use the
brand name for Asha and other low-end phones.<br />
For smartphones, this decision is yet to be made that what name, combination
of names or brand name would be used for the smartphones after the transaction.
This will be decided when both the companies will meet at a time set for that.<br />
Going forward, after 10 years, Microsoft will not use Nokia’s brand name for
its devices.<br />
Nokia will continue to be a company outside of Microsoft and will retain
rights to its brand and management thereof.<br />
Not to mention, Microsoft will continue to own the Microsoft brand and
Windows Phone brand.<br />
So in words, even after the Microsoft-Nokia transaction, hundreds of
thousands of Nokia outlets will keep carrying the Nokia branding and they will
keep selling Nokia phones like before till the end of licensed period.<br />
We are also looking at proper and intelligent channelization of our sales
network, where both Nokia and Microsoft distributors leverage each other.<br />

Apple has announced the 5th generation iPad last night, which doesn’t
 just bring a major change on its feature set, but also in its name. The
 latest iPad is called the ‘iPad Air’. The inspiration for this possibly
 came from the MacBook Air, another Apple product acclaimed universally 
for its design.<br />
Statistically, the new iPad is 28 percent lighter than before, 
weighing 469g compared to 653g before, and is 20 percent thinner at 
7.5mm. The bezels are also an incredible 43 percent lesser than before. 
These statistics make this tablet the lightest full-size tablet in the 
world.<br />
The screen remains at the standard 9.7″ inch size and comes with a 
Retina Display of 1536 x 2048 pixels. The tablet comes with iOS 7.0.2 
pre-installed.<br />
On the hardware side, as expected, it comes with Apple’s 64-bit A7 
processor (8 times faster than before, 72 times faster graphics) which 
debuted on the on the 5s, along with M7 motion co-processor. PowerVR 
G6430 Graphics are used, while the storage options are set at 16/32/64 
or 128 GB.<br />

The iPad Air comes with a 5 megapixel camera on the back, capable of 
shooting Full HD video at 30 fps, along with a 1.2 mp camera on the 
front and dual microphones.<br />
Perhaps a disappointment for many could be the lack of Touch ID, which hasn’t made its way to any of the iPads.<br />
Connectivity options with iPad Air include Bluetooth 4.0, Lightning 
Port, Wi-Fi (twice faster with MIMO 802.11) and optional LTE. A 32 Whr 
battery powers the tablet for up to 10 hours.<br />
Finally, the price. The new iPad Air will start at $499 for the base 16 GB model when it will go for sale on November 1.<br />
The 32, 64 and 128 GB models can be obtained for $599, $699 and $799 
respectively. Color options will be either Silver/White or Space 
Grey/Black. The new Smart Covers, which feature the ability to get 
folded backwards, will come for $79. iPad 2 will be kept alive at $399.<br />
The iPad Air’s not the cheapest tablet in the market, by far. What 
you do get is the brilliant ecosystem which is second to none and that, 
according to most, will be something which will give it an edge over 
others. That justifies the extra price too.</div>

Apple has made it public yesterday that it has sold 170 million iPads
 in the product’s life cycle so far. According to estimates, the Mini 
holds a large marketshare amongst them all, so when Apple finally made 
the smaller tablet public last year, it really did recognize the screen 
size’s importance. And it has further made that fact clear.<br />
When the time came to announce the second-generation of the tablet, 
they needed to deliver strongly and that’s exactly what they did. But 
not without a few compromises.<br />
iPad Mini 2 comes with 7.9″ display’s and resolution has been upped 
to match the iPad’s resolution, 1536 x 2048 pixels (4 times that is, for
 you statistic-lovers!). That leads to a pixel density of 324 ppi.<br />

Under the cool metal, you get a 64-bit Apple A7 chip (8X faster with 
72X faster graphics) this time, wish puts it right into the territory of
 the iPad Air and iPhone 5s. PowerVR SGX G6430 graphics are also making 
an appearance.<br />
At the back is 5 mp camera with Full HD 1080p video at 30fps, along 
with a 1.3 mp camera at the front. Your connectivity options include 
Wi-Fi (two times faster through MIMO technology), Bluetooth 4.0, 
Lightning Port and optional LTE.<br />
But wait, what compromises were made? Well, the iPad Mini 2 is 0.3 
inch THICKER (yes that’s right) and 23g heavier than before at 7.5mm and
 331g. (In case you don’t know, the same travesty occurred in the case 
of the iPad 3, which got cancelled after just seven months)<br />
But the real bummer might turn out to be the price. The base 16 GB 
costs $399, while the 32, 64 and 128 GB versions will cost $499, $599 
and $699 respectively. That’s a lot and its biggest competitors cost 
almost half of that.<br />
The old Mini will still be sold for $299 while Smart Covers will retail for $69. The tablet will go on sale from November 1.</div>

Other than pulling the wraps off the new iPads, Apple also announced a few updates to its MacBook Pro with Retina Displays. <br />
The new 13 and 15 inch models come with the new 4th-generation Intel 
Haswell processors and the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Uncharacteristically
 for Apple, prices have been dropped too.
<br />
The new MacBook Pros with Retina Display (I’ve always said that 
name is longer than it should been) are also sleeker than before. The 
13″ model is just 1.56 Kg heavy and 1.8 cm thick now.
<br />
Amount of RAM in this model is 4 GB, half than what it was 
before. Other than that, it comes with a dual-core 2.4Ghz Intel Core i5 
Haswell processor, Iris Pro Graphics and 128 GB PCI Express SSDs. It 
will also come with the new Wi-Fi 802.11ac standard and up to 9 hours 
battery life.
<br />
The new 15″ model comes with a quad-core 2Ghz Core i7 processor, 8
 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. A higher-end configuration with 2.3Ghz Core i7 
processor, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM and Nvidia’s GeForce GT 750M graphics 
will be there too.
<br />
The base model of this version will also come with Intel 
CrystalWell graphics, the faster Wi-Fi standard and 8-hour battery life.
<br />
For the price, the 13″ model will start at $1299, $200 cheaper 
than before. The 15″ version will also be less-expensive than before, at
 $1999.</div>

Realizing the importance of imparting quality education and providing
 appropriate ICT-based learning aids to public sector students in 
Pakistan, Telenor Pakistan recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding
 (MoU) with Children Library Complex (CLC), Lahore.
<br />
During the pilot phase of this E-Education Project, Telenor 
Pakistan will technologically enable the computer lab at CLC and provide
 top of the line content of <a href="http://www.khanacademy.org/" target="_blank">Khan Academy</a>, while CLC will develop the course structure for imparting content in support of national curricula.
<br />
The MoU was signed by Muhammad Aslam Hayat, Chief Corporate 
Affairs Officer, Telenor Pakistan and Abdul Jabbar Shaheen, Secretary 
School Education Department, Government of Punjab during a ceremony at 
Children Library Complex.
<br />
On this occasion, Muhammad Aslam Hayat, Chief Corporate Affairs 
Officer, Telenor Pakistan said, “This is the era of Massive Open Online 
Courses (MOOC), however most public schools in Pakistan remain largely 
unconnected to Internet. We at Telenor believe that every child should 
benefit from what Open Course Ware has to offer, and have therefore 
selected Khan Academy content, which is available offline. Integration 
of ICT in teaching and learning process has transformed the learning 
experience of students in many developed countries and we are proud of 
promoting this trend in Pakistan.”
<br />
While providing access to top of the line education content, the 
initiative is expected to help improve conceptual understanding and 
science aptitudes of grade 9 and 10 public sector students and teachers.
<br />
Future scalability and course of action for the next phase will be devised based on the impact of pilot.</div>

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) today announced 
consolidated revenues of Rs. 100.5 billion for nine months period that 
ended on September 30, 2013.<br />
The financial results for the period ended September 2013 were 
announced today at the Company’s Board of Directors (BoD) meeting held 
in Islamabad.<br />
PTCL group posted a revenue growth of 16% with Net Profit amounting 
to Rs. 11.3 billion for the period under review, while Gross Profit 
stood at Rs.  35.98 billion.<br />
PTCL’s revenue stood at Rs 60.7 billion and showed a significant 
increase of 31%, with Net Profit standing at Rs.  9.3 billion, while 
Gross Profit was recorded at Rs.  20.8 billion.<br />

Walid Irshaid, President & CEO PTCL expressed his pleasure at this strong performance of the company adding that,<br />
