Intel Pakistan and UNESCO Islamabad have signed a Letter of 
Intent(LOI) to enable social change and build human capital in 
underserved communities in Pakistan.<br />
Under the scope of this LOI, UNESCO Islamabad will utilize Intel 
education content for pilot e-learning material used in schools; conduct
 pilot professional development courses based on <a href="http://www.intel.com/cd/corporate/education/APAC/ENG/pk/teach/266521.htm" target="_blank">Intel Teach Program</a>, link Intel® Easy Steps and Intel® Entrepreneurship Basics course content to local UNESCO website.
<br />
Intel & UNESCO will explore advocacy of these initiatives for
 the benefit of public sector education and relevant government 
departments.
<br />
Country Manager, Intel Pakistan, Naveed Siraj appreciated the collaborative approach agreed upon between the two organizations.<br />

learning outcomes & act as agents of change better equipped to 
prepare their students to face the challenges of the 21st century 
workforce.

Intel® Easy Steps course is designed for adults in underserved 
areas who find themselves at a disadvantage due to lack of access to 
proper training on the basic use of computers. Intel Pakistan and UNESCO
 Islamabad will integrate Intel Easy Steps Course content to help 
learners become capable to compete in the digital world.
<br />
Intel® Entrepreneurship Basics (E-Basics) Course develops 
knowledge of fundamental concepts associated with initiating, developing
 and running a business. Intel & UNESCO will encourage innovation 
and entrepreneurship as drivers of sustainable growth by leveraging 
Intel® E-Basics & providing the youth opportunities to develop 
solutions for relevant social problems.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, Country Director,
 UNESCO, said that UNESCO and Intel have joined hands by signing a 
global framework agreement for carrying out common projects to achieve 
their common strategic objectives. She appreciated that areas identified
 for joint cooperation will help bridging the digital divide and promote
 the effective use of ICTs to support universal access to education, the
 delivery of quality learning and teaching, equity in education, the 
professional development of teachers and more efficient education 
management and governance.

In Pakistan, she said, there is a huge potential for ICTs to 
bring about the much required qualitative improvement in the system and 
support the universal access. So far, she said, the use of ICTs in 
Education is limited. It needs to be mainstreamed in the public sector 
education system to help Pakistan accelerate its pace for achieving its 
education and literacy targets. She emphasized that the cooperation 
between UNESCO and Intel in Pakistan will help build the demand for ICTs
 in Education and will build the capacities of teachers and teacher 
educators.

their efforts to promote sustainable development, growth and prosperity

PTCL Submits Non-Binding Offer to Acquire Warid

Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) yesterday 
announced that it has submitted a non-binding offer to acquire 100 
percent shares in Warid Telecom, reported Daily Times.<br />
Announcement was made through a notice – also produced below — sent 
to Karachi Stock Exchange detailing that the non-binding offer for 
Warid’s acquisition will remain valid for one month.<br />
Notice said that further proceeding with the transaction is subject 
to a number of conditions including completion of satisfactory due 
diligence, acquiring relevant regulatory approvals, acceptance of the 
offer and fulfilment of certain requirements and conditions necessary to
 close the transactions.<br />
The notice confirms that PTCL has definitive intent to buy Warid, 
however, the deal isn’t finalized yet – or at least we aren’t aware of 
it.<br />
For those who don’t know, a non-binding offer is made when buyer is 
not required to put down any deposit or earnest money and neither the 
buyer nor the owner is to any kind of legal obligation.<br />
Along with PTCL, through its parent group Etisalat, Zong and Russia’s VimpelCom – the parent group of Mobilink – are hot contenders for the Warid buyout.<br />
Etisalat, which is now eyeing Warid operations in Pakistan, had previously bought 26 percent shares in PTCL.<br />
It maybe recalled that group is still holding USD 800 million for the earlier transaction it carried in 2005 due to a dispute with government of Pakistan. It is likely that group may face regulatory hurdles since it hasn’t cleared the dues for PTCL buyout yet.<br />

As we reported last week,
 Dr. Syed Ismail Shah and Mr.Tariq Sultan have assumed the charge of 
Chairman, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Member (Finance) of 
PTA respectively, said a statement issued by the regulator.<br />
The Government in compliance with the Honourable Supreme Court’s orders
 has appointed three Members in PTA through a competitive process. Dr. 
Syed Ismail Shah was appointed Member (Technical) and given acting 
charge of the Chairman PTA, the statement said.
<br />
Dr. Syed Ismail Shah has an Engineering Bachelors from Pakistan 
and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from University of Pittsburgh, PA, 
USA. He brings with him rich experience of both private and government 
sector.
<br />
Mr.Tariq Sultan has joined as Member (Finance) PTA. He remained 
DG Finance in PTA for several years and was currently working Director 
General (Revenue Assurance) PTA. He holds MBA from IBA Karachi, Masters 
in Accounting and Finance from Manchester University and CIMA from 
Canada.

Secretary, Ministry of Law, Justice & Human Rights Mr. 
Justice(R) Muhammad Raza Khan has been given additional charge of the 
post of Member (Compliance & Enforcement) in PTA.
<br />
On Monday, Acting Chairman PTA and Member Finance held meeting 
with senior officers of the Authority and discussed various short terms 
and long term measures to facilitate and regulate telecom industry of 
Pakistan.
<br />
Senior PTA officers briefed them about different matters including auction of spectrum.
<br />
With constitution of PTA Authority it is hoped that the telecom 
sector would be able to show further progress it and steps would be 
taken to resolve outstanding issues. Acting Chairman PTA also made a

Mobilink Foundation has initiated relief operations in Baluchistan as
 a means of alleviating the distress of those affected by the recent 
earthquake. A severe shortage of food has resulted in starvation in the 
worse affected areas.<br />
As part of its initial effort, Mobilink Foundation will be

assistance to over 7,000 victims in various relief camps in the vicinity

Meet XGear, a First of its Kind Car-Human Communication Link, Developed by Pakistanis

The way we interact with technology has changed drastically over the 
last few years. Just think of it, what were our perceptions of phones 
and other gadgets just 10 years ago and what are they now? No doubt that
 our devices are getting more and more integrated into our lives, and 
becoming a part of it.<br />
Yet, one tech item which we interact with (daily) remains an outsider.  That is our car.<br />
It is agreeable that nowadays you can monitor the position of your 
car from anywhere through a GPS – through tracker companies or by 
deploying your own GPS device into the car — but that’s pretty much 
about it.<br />
You never know what’s going on the inside, how does your car ‘feel’ or how is it performing.<br />
XGear, the brainchild of a startup called <a href="http://www.onestepsolutions.biz/" target="_blank">One Step Solutions</a>, is pretty much hoping to solve your the problem.<br />

The product is made all-more interesting by the fact that it’s made 
by some Pakistani guys and is largely developed in Pakistan too. I had 
the chance to sit with Mr. Ahmed Khalid, the co-founder and CEO of the 
company, recently who was kind enough to grant me an email interview.<br />

<span style="font-weight: bold;">The company</span></h4>
Until now, chances are that you’ve never heard of One Step Solutions in your life so far.<br />
What is it all about? According to Ahmed, he and his team have tasked
 themselves with the goal of blending technology seamlessly into your 
life.<br />
“One Step Solutions has a clear vision of using technology to make 
lives simpler,” he says. “Our innovative culture enables us to think out
 of the box to develop remarkable products to make a dent in the 
universe. Over the past years we have developed some of very innovative 
products to make a massive impact on people using them in various 
industries such as an affordable HRM solution which is completely 
integrated with SAP and SAGE, a specialized document scanning and 
storage solution, SMS based authentication of FMCG products, and 
completely revamping the OMR based testing solution to enable people to 
use ink pens, ball points and even markers of any colour to fill in the 
tests.”<br />

But the main focus here is on cars. And on XGear.<br />
XGear is the company’s solution to bringing this spectacularly useful
 component of your life, called a car. closer to you. It consists mainly
 of a hardware dongle which connects to your car’s OBD port (located 
under the dashboard normally).<br />
After docking the device there, the data from your car is sent 
regularly to your phone or PC via the XGear application which will be 
available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone on mobile, and on Windows 
XP, Vista, 7 and 8 for PC.<br />
“The application will let you view your car usage and trip logs over 
time. Feedback on your driving style will help you optimize the fuel 
consumption,” He tells me.<br />
Not only this, but the application will also monitor your speed data,
 the car condition for you to make use of before service, inform you of 
your pre-planned events by sending notifications and work towards making
 your ride eco-friendlier. There will even be a drivers’ social network 
where you can earn achievements and badges based on your driving. This 
all data will get stored on the cloud.<br />
But what if you’ve got an aging car? No worries, as most cars come 
with the OBD port, XGear should work with them. Still for confirmation, 
the company has already tested the device on vehicles by Toyota, Honda, 
Suzuki, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, KIA and Hyundai.<br />
“XGear should work with pretty much every car manufactured after 1996.”<br />

Note: This unit here is a prototype. The final unit will be 1/4<sup>th</sup> the size of this particular one and should be able to fit perfectly in just about every car.<br />
But when all is said and covered, the thing which matters most in the
 end is pricing. We know some great products like the Segway, which 
failed only because of high pricing. What about the XGear?<br />
“The price point of the XGear would be around PKR 20,000 including 
the hardware dongle and the software,” Mr. Ahmed said. Mind you, that 
what you’re getting for that price is the entire package which should 
last almost as much as the car itself, according to him.<br />
As for the availability, One Step Solutions wants to release their

And the future? “My hopes with the XGear are high,” said Ahmed.<br />
“In 5 years I see this running in every car. I have done a very 
optimistic financial modelling, and see Xgear becoming the next big

Calling it the next big thing right now might seem fairly flattering 
(even though they’ve won the Green and Sustainable IT award at the P@SHA
 ICT Awards 2013 and cleared the Startup Pirates program) but then 
again, everything big starts small. This is the primary rule of business
